This year as the deciding factor in the scholarship I give to golfers at my alma mater (high school), I've devised a drawn out competition. Since the reward is a new set of irons, the skills tested are primarily iron skills.

Tell me what you think:

Availability
This scholarship is open to any current member of the golf team who will try out for golf in the fall of 2006.

Rules
Unlike last year’s scholarship, this year’s scholarship is going to be awarded by skill. Applicants will use their irons (and a few other clubs) to compete against each other. Each player will receive points depending on their rank in each challenge (i.e. 1st = 1 point, 2nd = 2 points, etc.). Ties will be awarded based on the highest possible # of points (i.e. 1 2 3 5 5 6). A one-point bonus applies to any holed shots (except in challenge #2). Balls may be placed by player in any lie they deem suitable. The applicant with the lowest score wins.

The Challenges
  1. Lag Putting: three long putts on different greens. Rank determined by total distance of all three putts from the hole. Holed putts receive a one-point bonus (and count as 0’0”).
  2. Short Putts: hole the most consecutive 5-foot putts from a location and to a hole of your choice. Rank determined by # of consecutive putts holed. As soon as you miss, you’re done.
  3. Driving: three tee shots are hit. The player can choose their longest, straightest drive. Two rankings are generated here: longest and straightest with the one ball counting towards both.
  4. Chipping: chip to three hole locations. Rank: total distance of all three balls.
  5. Pitching: pitch to three hole locations. Rank: total distance of two best balls.
  6. Bunker Shot: hit three different bunker shots. Rank: total distance of two best balls.
  7. Par Three: hit from three locations on #4 tee (front, middle, back) to a middle pin. Rank: total distance of two best balls.
  8. 150-yard Shot: hit three approach shots from 150 yards. Rank: total distance of two best balls.
  9. 100-yard Shot: hit three approach shots from 100 yards. Rank: total distance of two best balls.
  10. 75-yard Shot: hit three approach shots from 75 yards. Rank: total distance of two best balls.
Tiebreaker: to be determined by a 9-hole match played with irons only (and putter) scored as a 10-point match (one point per hole, total stroke play). If a tie persists, 18 holes of match play putting with sudden death overtime will be used to determine the winner.

Example Scoring
If a player places 1st, 2nd, 5th, 4th, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th, 2nd, and 1st with two holed shots, his total score is (1+2+5+4+2+3+4+5+2+1-2) = 27. If no-one else scores lower than 27, this player wins.

That's very cool that you are giving back to your school. The only thing I wonder is would this cause any type of rules violation? Since you would be considered a booster, does that qualify as a "gift". Our society is so full of stupid red tape and ridiculous rules, I could see someone complaining. I'm not trying to be jerk. I would hate to see something very positive end up being a problem for you or the kid who wins. Anyway, I think it's a great thing to do.

It's not illegal.

So what do y'all think of the contest itself?

I think it looks great. It is diverse enough that it tests everything and isn't heavily weighted on one area. Nice job. The kid who wins will really deserve those irons. How is the team?

How is the team?

A bunch of slackers, really. Really bad attitudes on a few of 'em, shaky on the others. Only one or two seem to have good heads on their shoulders, and they don't shoot well enough to get into the lineup regularly.
