How often do you Clean your Clubs?

When i play with the pro at my course, (which i do quite regularly as i work there aswell), he always moans at me for not cleaning my clubs.

I scrape all dirt out of the grooves before my shots and may clean them before a big competition, however in general i dont have the time cos in the summer holidays i play almost every day but i keep them generally respectable, but i was wondering how often all you other peeps clean your clubs and whether it makes a difference.

Everyone is different, but I clean my clubs often. I am a set up kinda guy. One reason I have not switched from a pure blade is that I like the clean lines and shiney face when cleaned. I am more interested in what you all clean your clubs with? But with undue negative rep I am unable to post new threads....

I dry brush the faces of mine with a brass wire brush.
I dry brush the backs and logo areas with a plastic(nylon) wire brush.
All the mud has to be dry before you can do this. That is why I wait until the beginning of the next round to clean them. Its just easier..

I soak a towel and squeeze out the excess before I head out for a round and keep it draped on the chassis of my BagBoy... I wipe my clubs clean after each stroke - if neccesary - before putting them back in the bag. Only takes a couple seconds.

I keep a small brush on my bag so I try and do it after every shot, time permitting. I don't like to hold others up, so if I am the last to hit on a hole I will wait until I have the time. If I pull out a club and it's dirty I will clean it off before I hit.

Every once in a while I will take them in the house and clean them good. Clean the grips, wipe down the shaft, and really get the clubface clean. Warm water, dishsoap, and an old toothbrush works great.

I clean them after every shoot with a wet towel and after with a dry one. And after the whole round at home I clean them completely with water, towel and a plastic brush, to remove all kind of dirt on them.

I only clean my clubs at the beginning of the year and at the end of the year.

I wipe them down with a wet towel usually after a round or two.

However, when I feel like it, I give them a REALLY good cleaning, maybe once or twice a year - this includes metal polish / car polish on the soles and the tops of the irons (not the faces), and toothbrush in a sink or bucket of warm water + detergent. I also fill in chips on the tops of my drivers and woods with a paint pen. I also may take the time to regrip them - I think I'm due for a regripping soon - the irons have stock grips with 3 years on them. I hit some clubs with Winn grips and they were.. quite awesome.

As for polishing the clubs, you might ask why:

The metal polish cleans out impurities that MIGHT rust the metal and gives the clubs a great glossy look. It won't make them look brand new unless you REALLY work on them with a buffer, but I just use a foam applicator and rag. :) The car polish is great for restoring the finish to the paint of the driver, removes ball marks, and smoothes out chips and scratches even though it doesn't help my game AT ALL - it just makes the clubs shiny and especially clean. Don't use the metal polish on your wedges if the wedges have a special finish on them, e.g. Vokey oil cans or CG Black Pearls. Also, don't use the metal polish on the faces of any of your clubs - you'll make the face slick. Just use rubbing alcohol or Goo Gone to clean the faces if you have ball marks on them.

I like to clean my clubs as often as possible with washing up liquid- i buff them afterwards too.

I spit on my clubs and use the towel after each shot. I also like to have the kid at the bag drop run a towel over them. But when I'm busting around on public courses for a few rounds in a row, they can get pretty dirty.

I have never found a good way to get into the grooves in between shots. Tees are too fat. If anybody has a quick tip on that, thanks in advance.

Either a wire brush, or do what my father-in-law does and break out your trusty pocket knife between holes and dig out the grooves.

I'm always afraid to use the wire brush. Does it scratch the club face? I don't think I have ever used one on my clubs.

I clean my clubs as I go. Playing early in the morning, before the dew burns off, is a good way to keep your sticks clean. Sometimes, if the grooves on my irons get clogged, I have this groove cleaner that looks like a screwdriver, does a great job, and quick, too. But that is rare. By giving my clubs a quick wipe after every shot, my clubs never get that dirty so I never really have to take extra time and effort to clean them.

The brush is brass.. The club face (should be) stainless steel..

Think of a copper bullet going down the steel barrel of a gun. The softer metal is going to take the damage. At least thats the theory.. Now, any place that is a mirror finish, like the back of the clubs, I use a plastic brush because the brass bruch *could* (not likely but *could*) dull out the mirror finish.

After every shot. I use a thing called a Groove Tube, plastic bottle with a plastic brush mounted on the top of it. You fill it with water, as you brush the club head with the top, water comes out and cleans your grooves. Then just wipe it dry with a towel. Maximum groove action on every shot! I picked it up at an off course golf store. Great buy.
