I'm thinking about joining a private club. Can anyone help me out with their experiences about being a member at a club. Positives/negatives? The one I'm most interested in would probably be considered middle of the road when it comes to costs and exclusivity.

Thanks

It all depends on where you are, and how old you are. Im 16 and used to have a membership at a club for 3 years. I definatly love being a member of something and love being in the member atmosphere. Although, i would definatly not go back to that club. The course was wonderful but the people there were awful. Thankfully im going somewhere else this year.

The positives of getting a membership is, you have people clean your clubs, tournaments, club storage, meet new people, and you can go golfing anytime you want. And its generally fun when you play the course alot so you usually shoot well.

The negatives all depend on where you go, At my course, we had a ton of senior members who were complete jerks. I wasn't the kind of person to fool around. I am very mature and had extraordinate etiquette. These seniors would make smart remarks and really get on my nerves. They also think they run the show and act like they own the course. But I hands down would beat them everytime. I also had a lot of playing restrictions and usually couldn't golf by myself. The staff there also treated us like little kids, and we usually got no respect anywhere around there. Some kids there must be ruining it for the others.

All in all, If you have the money, definatly get a membership. Its an amazing time with unlimited golf. Its a great place to spend your day.

I think any negatives regarding club membership (save for cost) are going to be course specific, and difficult to pin down generally.

The biggest positive for me was being able to play whenever, and not really have to think about it. The way I play now (not being a member), I generally have to plan it all out specifically and know I have enough time, because I'm not going to waste the money on 18, or even 9, if there's a chance I won't get it all in. When I was a member of a club, my favorite thing to do was to jump out an hour or so before sunset and play as many as I could. The course was usually empty, and I just love that time of day for playing the game.

    • I know one recent college grad who's trying the same thing.  This guy was a Division III All-American, went on to play one year at Division I LSU, and is not working hard.  He won the Gulf States Open, a pro event, and made it to the second stage of the Korn Ferry Tour School late in the fall.  And didn't make the cut to get to the final stage.  I won't talk about swing or play stuff, but I believe there are a couple of things that are essential.  Obviously, talent, and drive, or work ethic.   I can't tell you how to do it, but you HAVE to get through it.  Golf is going to be your life, and it takes lots of work. Two more things that are really critical.  You'll need the facility to be able to practice.  My young friend stayed in Baton Rouge, as a past player on the team he can still use the LSU practice facilities.  And money.  Its unlikely you'll be able to work a full-time job and practice the way you will need to.  You'll probably need backing, from a parent, from a consortium of friends or club members., something to support you. Good luck, its not an easy path, but anything is possible.  Another young man from our area, Mike Brennan, just won for the first time on the "big" PGA Tour.
    • No one in the world is as smart as Phil thinks he is.
    • Get more comfortable with being uncomfortable. If you don’t like practicing then give up now. You don’t have the passion to become a pro. Unless that mentality changes you won’t do well under stressful situations.    Call the PGA Tour and ask. They probably have resources available.

    • Thanks man, sometimes it’s hard to improve bc when I’m not feeling comfortable I don’t like practicing bc I get frustrated. Any advice?
