hi guys

I currently have a Nike Sasquatch with a regular shaft (Mitsubishi)

I am having alot of trouble keeping the ball straight this year as I have gotten bigger and stronger, and by 16 I think it would be a good idea to switch to a stiff shaft. But im still not totally sure if its the right decision.

What can I look for in my swing that can tell me I need to switch? Will the shaft be too whippy etc? How do i know that i need to switch?

do you know your swing speed? i would guess-timate that a swing speed of above 90-95 would work better with a stiff shaft. also, make sure whatever shaft you are looking at has the right kick point and torque that you want in order to get the ideal trajectory. they usually have all that info on their company sites.

lower trajectory means higher kick point in the shaft. and i would suggest switching to a stiff shaft with your swing speed. you may see a little loss of distance at first, but i doubt it will be noticeable. and a stiffer shaft with your swing speed should help with accuracy.

but of course, try a few shafts out on the range to see the differences in how you hit it.

Playing with a regular shaft right now when i use a stiff should actually cause me to slice a little bit also right? I still want to know what to look out for to really proove i need a stiff.

Dent,

In addition to swing speed, what is your tempo like? Is it smooth? Are you aggressive? I ask because swing speed is not the dominant factor when it comes to shaft flex. I know a guy who plays with an extra stiff shaft because he's so aggressive with his swing. His swing speed, however, is not off the charts. If you're going to change, make the change because you feel the shaft is too whippy, like you're swinging a wet noodle. Also, you may want to make the switch if you find yourself "losing" the club. What I mean by "losing" is that you don't feel the club through impact and losing some control. I would not make the switch simply because swing speed has improved. Just my two cents.

I'd have to say i have a really smooth swing, but on the side it is agressive because my backswing is so fast and my followthrough is even faster.

I dont know about it feeling very whippy but I do feel outta control, I cant control my swing at all really. But im not sure If an X-Stiff would be for me.

mate my swing is like 85mph and my stiff shaft with my r7 460 9.5* head, works perfectly. now when i middle it i can get 230m. i hit every fairway except two yesterday and shot a 3 over par back nine. you could go to a demo day maybe and test stiff shafts or a golf shop with a launch monitor. but i would say get stiff, and if you don't like it, change it back and keep the shaft for a year or so and put it back in. but 95mph seems enough for a stiff shaft

Alright now that I am convinced to get a stiff shaft, what shafts do you recommend? Im looking for something with a little bit of a low ball naturally, but can get it high when i need to.

Alright so I looked at my old shaft, its a Diamana by Mitsubishi Rayon (Regular) I wanna get something similiar, but I have no idea the tip size, or the weight of my current shaft. I see you can get the same one but its $300!!! Why so much and what can I do?

Go to the maker's website and find the dimensions of the shaft. Then go to different manufacturer's and find similar specs.

Please note that not all shafts play the same even if the specs are similar. What might be a stiff in one brand is a regular in another. A good thing to do is contact a certified fitter without an affiliation to one, particular brand. Then demo all the shafts he has. He or she can make any adjustments you need. A good shaft won't break your bank account.

The only thing that seems around my price range is the Aldila NVS 65 Wood Shaft

http://www.golftown.com/gtcommerce/s...P3737C547.aspx

as seen here. I have a question, if I bought my driver a year ago, and got a regular shaft and now need a stiff, why should I have to pay $300 for a shaft thats already in my driver just a different flex?

The simplest reason is that you are spending money on the driver. For example, the shaft that I have is $250-$300, depending on the seller. However, if I purchased a Titleist Driver, the option on this shaft would be an additional $100. I'm using Titleist as an example because they offer this option.

On Mitsubishi's site, it gives instructions on how to make the shaft stiffer. Perhaps a fitter near you can take your current shaft and make those adjustments?

that post is wack. dent i am no expert on shafts but there are many great ones out there that i am sure you have heard of. the proforce V2 seems to be popular. but the way to know is just to try em and see how they go. if you like low flight then i would ask a fitter what he would recommend for that. hope everything goes well with that buddy.

dude I think you'd definitely do better with a stiff flex, mid-high kickpoint.
Try the Diamana Blue Board if you have a smooth fast swing & want to keep the ball on a lower trajectory... and FYI
just b/c Nike uses Diamana shafts stock in their drivers...doesn't mean it's the same shaft you'll be paying $300 for.
You can get a blue board or white board shaft online for $250 shipped. I know b/c I just got a white board installed in my driver last week.

it might take a little bit to get used to the way the club feels..but once you do and make your adjustments...you'll find a stiffer flex makes it easier to control the ball. at least....that's what I think.

    • Is it? I bought the Stack radar to replace my PRGR based on what Stack told me! When I am swinging for speed, the PRGR would miss 50%-80% of my backswings due to a higher speed. The stack seldom misses those- at least for me.
    • As an analyst by nature, I would like to compare the scores under both systems. It is something we can easily do if we have the data. I actually thought the new system was less fair to those whose game was on the decline - like mine! Old: Best 10 of last 20 scores with the .96 multiplier. Course handicap excluded course rating and overall par. New: Best 8/20. Course handicap includes course rating -par. My understanding is Stableford caps scores at Net double bogey like stroke play. If so, handicap should be slower to rise because you are only using 8 versus 10 scores. If I am missing something, I am curious enough to  want to understand what that may be. My home course tees that I play are 72.1/154 now. My best score out here is 82. When my game started to decline, my handicap didn’t budge for 13 rounds because of good scores in my first 8! I know I am an anomaly but my handicap has increased almost 80% in the past few years (with only a few rounds this year). For a few months I knew I was losing every bet because my game was nowhere near my handicap. I suspect I have steamrolled a few nuances but that shouldn’t matter much. When I have modeled this with someone playing the same tees and course, one good round, or return to form, will immediately reduce the handicap by some amount.
