Here's my situation: I do not want to spend a lot of money on an iron set (I'm only 17 years old). So I can get a new set of Tommy Armour Silver Scot Forged CB, used Mizuno mp-30, used hogan apex plus, or something else.
Does anyone have any suggestions on other clubs or experience with the clubs mentioned?

The irons you mentioned are all great irons. What are the prices for each set? I know where you can get a set of the Tommy Armours for $175 shipped, new.

I just bought a set of Mizuno MP-30's on ebay and I love them! Take some getting used to, but they are far superior to my old irons. $220 shipped, 4-PW, and they're in excellent shape. Main thing is to try and be patient; eventually a good deal will come up. The main thing to remember about buying forged irons on ebay is to check the photos, since these irons wear easily and I saw more than a few sets that were in pretty rough shape.

I don't think you can ever go wrong with a set of forged Hogans. I demo'd the TA Silver Scot CBs, and found the 6.0 shafts too stiff for me, the 5.0's much better but a little loose. I have an set of BH Grinds with Apex 4 shafts that I like very much. The shafts seem to have a great balance between feel and control.

Even against todays irons I think it is hard to beat a set of Ping Eye2's in decent shape - plenty available on ebay and relatively easy to work out the custom fit options for yourself.
I definetly agree with comments above re: taking your time and shopping around on ebay!

Doesn't anyone worry about getting a set of "knockoffs" or "fakes" on ebay? I have seen a lot of deals and I think that is where my new set is going to come from...but I can't help but worry.

I wouldn't worry about knock offs in used clubs. I"ve bought over 200 things on ebay and been very happy. Only buy from people with pay pal and with high positive feedback.

check golf galaxy regularly they get alot of trade ins you might stumble on some gems

If you are looking at the Hogans, you can get them brand new at rockbottomgolf.com for $260 - Stiff Steel, or $300 Graphite, both sets have hybrid 3 and 4 irons. Couple that price with a 10% off coupon by google searching and you get a new set cheaper than a used from ebay. Dont ask me how they sell them for that price when the retail is 7-800, but it worked for me. I just got mine ($230 shipped), cant wait for this rain to stop so I can get out and try em out for the first time. 3balls.com also has used "like new" MP-32s for $600.

I think used irons are a good thing...you can get a nice set of irons for tons cheaper than a new set that will work just as good

    • Day 353: mirror work again today. Working on the same stuff - wrist twist and shaft lean.
    • This is my second year playing golf, I started last season but have always struggled with a slice. I've tried multiple things to try and fix the slice: Closing the face. Rotating my right hand out or clockwise in the grip. Keeping the club head low in my back swing. Focusing on a straight swing path. Trying the straighter arms like Bryson D. (as seen in the videos above) Trying to not let me hips get too far ahead of my down swing. Trying to keep my shoulders down until after I've made contact with the ball. Etc. I recently changed to the straighter arms which has helped me adjust away from such a drastic slice. So it has helped a bit. Before that, I was trying to keep the club head low in the back swing and this was the most helpful in correcting the slice, however it drastically removed power and distance in the strikes and would even sometimes result in a hook. About a couple months ago I had a single lesson with my driver and learned some helpful things, but have since struggled to perform what I learned well. One of the things in the lesson was to keep my shoulder down more in the the down swing until after making contact with the ball. This would help the slice a bit, sometimes drawing the ball. To even it out, I was instructed to rotate my hips a bit earlier in the down swing. What I have noticed however with the earlier hip rotation is that it's really hurting my lower back a lot. Since backing off on that it's helped not injure my low back as much. I believe my main issue might possibly be the swing path, being a Pull Slice.   See above, was mid typing when you posted. I have never watched Moe Norman's swing to be honest. I have never measure my hip rotation, but I'd like to hear your thoughts on that after you read about my hip rotation / back pain issue.
    • Two questions… Are you trying to swing like Moe Norman? What's your hip turn like? Have you ever measured it?
    • I've been Playing Golf for: 2 years My current handicap index or average score is: 18 Index My typical ball flight is: Slice/Fade with a driver and FW. Generally straight with irons, varies some days left or right. The shot I hate or the "miss" I'm trying to reduce/eliminate is: Driver slice. Videos:
    • What are the best drills to practice awareness for club face control? This one came to mind after remembering a bit from the latest release of the podcast. I also think that I have poor club face to path awareness.
