New member here.  A 50 year old total beginner.  I have decided to get some lessons on the regular.  I have one next month.  I have purchased the Wilson D9 irons.  I got a great deal on them, brand new, and trying to sell the Titleist AP1's I have.  The technology is so advanced compared to the 712 AP1's.  Currently, I don't have anything in between my driver and 5 iron.  I just need a couple of clubs to close the gap.  I am going to ask the instructor which route he thinks I should take in regards to hybrids or woods or both.  I do have a budget in mind.  Just for discussion, what do you all think about these?  I am looking for something for a 50 year old beginner.  I just want to hit the ball straight and as far as my body allows.  Any advice on any of these would be appreciated.

My recommendation is to get out and play some… and not worry about completing your bag just yet.

Grab a used 5W that you can hit - try it out in shop to make sure it will work for you. Then...

The 5W will give you some distance, and can get you out of rough.  Versatile club.

    • Day 2 (20 Jan 26) - Similar work as yesterday - started with lead hand solo drills with the 50°, followed by series of pitches and chips utilizing full setup.
    • Hey, thanks for the feedback. I do lift weights but I’m also adding yoga or Pilates for mobility and flexibility to my routine.
    • Day 18: 2026.01.20 Continuing work on arm raise during backswing. Starting to feel less weird, especially the slower I go. Looking like a busy week so might be the weekend before I can hit some balls.
    • It’s possible the graphite shaft has a small internal crack or a delamination. Tapping it and hearing a vibrating sound is usually a sign the shaft isn’t behaving as it should. Since the store wasn’t helpful, consider taking it to a club fitter or a pro shop that can check the shaft flex and integrity. If it’s defective, you might be able to get a replacement from the manufacturer.
    • It’s interesting how much a 3D system changes your understanding. Observing top players in full detail and realizing the trail knee shouldn’t fully extend is a great example of why being open to new info is so important. I like your approach: not trying to be “right,” but trying to teach correctly based on actual evidence. Makes sense why golfers would benefit from this perspective.
