hello,

i started playing golf two years ago and have been pretty obsessed for those two years and play as often as i can and have worked my ball striking to what i think is adept. im 22 yrs old, 6'1 and 200 lbs. my 5i goes about 200 on a good strike. i still have my first set i got two years ago (tommy armour 845 silver scot) that i got for $150 new. i just graduated university and im looking to buy some new irons. i was at the range the other day and a buddy had some cleveland cg1 blades. i hit a couple of them and fell in love with the way they looked, felt and the ball flight. so yesterday i went to the range and asked to demo all the blades they have. they gave me a 6 iron from the titleist zb blades, nike blades, titleist 755, mizuno mp-33 and mp-60. i struck all of them very well and loved the sound and flight. i really didn't see much difference in them but im sure there was some slight trajectory/distance difference but it was windy so i couldn't really tell. all i ever heard was that blades are difficult to hit and you have to be a really good player. am i stupid for wanting to get blades and should i just get some cavity back irons?

mp-60's really aren't blades.. they're more of a cross b/t blades and cb's. they're still forgiving and have a profile similar to a blade so they look sexy when you setup. i'm in my 2nd season and I went from Callaway X-16's to MP 60's last year after 3/4 months of playing...i say just hit whatever you're comfortable hitting.
I only take my 5 iron 180 - 190....but it goes straight..so i don't complain.

The problem with blades for high handicap players is not the look/flight/result of the shot when you hit them well, rather the result when you hit them poorly.

If you are only hitting your irons pure 60% of the time, that means that 40% of your shots are going to be mis-hits. A poorly struck blade will not be a good shot, while a poorly struck cavity back will still be an acceptable shot many times. Blades are great if you hit the ball pure, but if you have some mis-hits, then blades can be terrible, especially with long irons.

Something you may want to look into is a set of progressive clubs. The type that have a cavity for longer to mid irons, but short irons are blades.

Another option would be to get a forged cavity back, like the Callaway Forged X. You could even buy them from 6 iron down with the forged "player's clubs" and then get the X-20 tours for your longer irons.

hmm i would have to disagree with the mishits. i could definitely feel the mishits but they still generally went straight in the direction i intended and with no noticeable distance loss. it was mainly the trajectory that deviated from a pure strike. it seemed this was the case throughout the 5 bladed irons i hit. i love that immediate feedback i get on mishits to help me improve my striking but it doesn't seem as punishing in the result as i would have been led to believe by other people's accounts on blades.

I think everyone should have a set of blades to use as a true test of your ballstriking. I love my Hogan Apex Grinds from the early 90s. I got mine for $25 off Craigslist.

This depends on what you want out of golf and how much you plan to put into it.

If you play once every few months, and might hit the range once in between those times, then yes, blades would be a bad move. If you practice several times a week and play regularly, and hit your irons reasonably well, then some form of players' irons - this includes blades and cut muscles - are good for you. They'll allow you to hit the kinds of shots you want to hit and play well from there. If you liked the MP-60s, look at the -57s. Neither of these are true blades, but they're as pretty close while still being a bit forgiving.

I was in your grey area last year as well and I pulled the trigger and switch to pure blades, and I couldnt be happier. Yes, they are harder to hit at first, but when you start finding your swing and hit begin to him crisp, you'll be happy you did. I'm going on my 4th month of owning my blades and about a month into really playing with them, and Sunday was my first day out with them. I played as expected, somewhat ok, but I had 3 pars and a birdie, so it's starting to pay off.

When you hit a blade, you dont feel the ball come of the face...it just goes...and there's no better feeling. I would tell you to do it, and just go for it. People will say only get them if you're a low handicapper, but its my opinion that if you really want to test your game out and keep on challenging yourself, then go for it. Im close to your build (6'2", 195) but a bit older (28) and i couldnt be happier with my decision. Go for it...

    • Is it? I bought the Stack radar to replace my PRGR based on what Stack told me! When I am swinging for speed, the PRGR would miss 50%-80% of my backswings due to a higher speed. The stack seldom misses those- at least for me.
    • As an analyst by nature, I would like to compare the scores under both systems. It is something we can easily do if we have the data. I actually thought the new system was less fair to those whose game was on the decline - like mine! Old: Best 10 of last 20 scores with the .96 multiplier. Course handicap excluded course rating and overall par. New: Best 8/20. Course handicap includes course rating -par. My understanding is Stableford caps scores at Net double bogey like stroke play. If so, handicap should be slower to rise because you are only using 8 versus 10 scores. If I am missing something, I am curious enough to  want to understand what that may be. My home course tees that I play are 72.1/154 now. My best score out here is 82. When my game started to decline, my handicap didn’t budge for 13 rounds because of good scores in my first 8! I know I am an anomaly but my handicap has increased almost 80% in the past few years (with only a few rounds this year). For a few months I knew I was losing every bet because my game was nowhere near my handicap. I suspect I have steamrolled a few nuances but that shouldn’t matter much. When I have modeled this with someone playing the same tees and course, one good round, or return to form, will immediately reduce the handicap by some amount.
