NYT Essay: I Really Didn't Want to Golf

Recommended Posts

Hi fellow golfers - Sharing here because that’s why many of us play.

Bernstein’s NYT piece shows golf isn’t just about the game but friendship. At 40, he resisted until realizing his closest friends were bonding without him. A quick golf boot camp taught him it’s less about swing and more about staying connected.

Got it. I thought the NYT allowed 1–3 free articles for non-subscribers. (I’m a long-term subscriber.)

As a subscriber, I can share “gift articles,” though I’m not sure if they work for multiple readers or just one.

Here’s the free gift article link generated via my subscription:

As best I can tell, the answer is multiple readers.  I think their intent is for subscribers to do what you did here:  posting it for friends (who may or may not be subscribers) to see and, perhaps, talk about.  I read a little bit of it, too little to comment, but I may come back later and read more and comment.

    • Day 51: Another long day, so another mirror work day. Again, focused on cleaning up set up and then not straightening the trail leg as much in the backswing. Need to feel like my knees stay a little more bent.
    • Day 595 - 2026-05-19 Got some short game work in today during some lessons. Made a lot of putts too. Without trying. Golfer kept chuckling.
    • Day 15, May 19.  Today, after work (in stages), I hit two dozen practice balls at home.  Slow swings, focusing on the lifting of the arms as per my latest lesson.
    • Day 259 5-19 Slow work on arms getting more in front. Lots of pause at the top, then rehearsals, then swing.
    • Day 70 (19 May 26) - weekly 9 hole session with my good friend this morning, however the better session was this afternoon with my grandson.  He put in for nine holes of match style play (we did stroke count as well).  The rules - I had to play from my regular tees but with irons only (no metal woods or hybrids (nothing with head covers)) while he played from the most fwd tees with his full bag.  Was a fun match and watching his competitive juices flowing.  He won the match 1/0 holding the lead as we tied the ninth.  Stroke wise it was a messy nine for me and he beat me by one stroke - not bad for a 10yr old.  Best of all - it was a dream session come true.
