I'm new to the game, but I've been told that as a beginner, I should buy a driver with a higher degree of loft. 13º maybe. Just an idea

Driver: Burner 10.5* Reg Flex
3 Wood: Mercury Golf MR Jumbo 16*
Irons: X-20 4-AW

I second the higher lofted driver. A really good driver to try is the Cobra F Speed 12*. You may also want to look at is the Taylormade R540XD.

You should be able to purchase both used, in good condition, for less than $90.

My vote is for taylormade. They have a lot of different clubs which can be had for cheap, and they perform very well. My r5 is my first "modern" driver, and I've loved it from the first time i hit it.

I was in the same boat as you a while ago when I first started and I eventually ended up with the Integra Quadratic 10.5*. I find that this loft is more than enough to launch it high. It ended up costing me $110 shipped.

You may want to look at some of the used goods such as the marketplace here, or at the other well known sites such as GolfWRX or Free Golf Info. They have great deals on used equipment and I find it easier than eBay. Component heads are of superb quality, and you shouldn't dismiss them just because they don't market that much. Take a look around for something from Tom Wishon, Geek, Bang, SMT, and Alpha - they all produce great equipment for 1/3 - 1/2 the price of the ones you see in store display.

If you want something name brand, perhaps check out Rock Bottom Golf. They regularly have 10-12% sales, and offer older brand name drivers in the $100 range. I've had my eye on the original Cleveland HiBore there for a while.

You can find a New TM R7 for $150 in golfsmith for example, if you want to extend your budget a little bit...

    • Is it? I bought the Stack radar to replace my PRGR based on what Stack told me! When I am swinging for speed, the PRGR would miss 50%-80% of my backswings due to a higher speed. The stack seldom misses those- at least for me.
    • As an analyst by nature, I would like to compare the scores under both systems. It is something we can easily do if we have the data. I actually thought the new system was less fair to those whose game was on the decline - like mine! Old: Best 10 of last 20 scores with the .96 multiplier. Course handicap excluded course rating and overall par. New: Best 8/20. Course handicap includes course rating -par. My understanding is Stableford caps scores at Net double bogey like stroke play. If so, handicap should be slower to rise because you are only using 8 versus 10 scores. If I am missing something, I am curious enough to  want to understand what that may be. My home course tees that I play are 72.1/154 now. My best score out here is 82. When my game started to decline, my handicap didn’t budge for 13 rounds because of good scores in my first 8! I know I am an anomaly but my handicap has increased almost 80% in the past few years (with only a few rounds this year). For a few months I knew I was losing every bet because my game was nowhere near my handicap. I suspect I have steamrolled a few nuances but that shouldn’t matter much. When I have modeled this with someone playing the same tees and course, one good round, or return to form, will immediately reduce the handicap by some amount.
