Didn't happen to me..

Two players played a match, on the 2nd hole it was realized player A had 15 clubs. As it goes the 2 players agreed that player A would "declare" one of this clubs out of play and no penalty would occur.

After the 18th hole, player A won the match, 1 up. Player B, still on the green, said.. no.. you have 15 clubs.. that's a penalty... 2 shots on the first 2 holes (max for match play I believe).. thus I win.

It became a very large argument and player B would not admit that they took a club out of play on #2, even though they both admitted they knew about it on #2.

The pro and asst pros could not agree.. it was sent to the USGA for a ruling.

The response was interesting... they said...

Player A should have removed the club from his bag, but since there was no golf cart it was understandable that they had no place else to put it.

Player A wins the match, as player B did not demand the penalty noted on the scorecard on hole #2 (scorecard shows them as tying 1 and 2). It was too late by the 3rd tee to complain as both players admitted to knowing on hole #2 that player A had 15 clubs.

I noted to the pro that he was allowed to further rule (he didn't) ...

Both players are disqualified for agreeing to waive the penalty on holes 1 and 2. As the rules say, in match play, if both players agree to ignore the rules for a penalty, etc, than both are disqualified.

Know the rules... demand a penalty be written on the score card, and have witnesses to the effect (caddy, etc).

I was waiting for you to get to that point. That's the option I'd have chosen.

I've enjoyed your three recent rules posts. The rules seem quite complex, but I think they're fairly straightforward, and most of the super-wacky rulings only arise: a) rarely b) in, like your example, situations where people really just goof up. Had they simply assessed the penalty after the first two holes, well, that's a pretty straight-forward ruling.

    • Day 8: 12/17/2024 Okay I took my new PPJ swing thought to the range today. I wasn't sure I was quite ready to do so, but I'm glad I did.  When I got it right it was good... really good. When I got it wrong it was a major fail. I hit lots of really ugly ones. But I didn't let that deter me. I stayed committed and focused on the PPJ and I avoided any temptation to go back to what I was doing before just so that I could "look" better at the range. I'm pretty excited about what I saw when I got it right.  I hit the 6 iron mostly (nearly all block work today). I also hit about 6 balls each with the PW, 8I, 5W and Driver. Those had varying degrees of success. I did crack one drive that let me feel and see what the changes will look like once I get fully trained.  Anyway, I'm going to go back to the mirror work for a couple of more days before bringing it back to the range. I do feel like if I can get this right my swing will improve a lot. So I think its worth the effort. I liked the way it looked on GEARs when I get it right, and I like the results I got at the range when I got it right. Now the goal is to work towards getting it right more often.
    • So I think it's that they can't just bend the shaft or hosel to get it to a new lie angle. They adjust that and it changes the weighting, so they have to then adjust all the weights to get it balanced again. I get the impression that it's a bit of an iterative process and they do it all in the US, so they're paying US labor costs to build it and make it work how it's supposed to. Whether you believe in the tech or not, I think that's a true statement.
    • Ah, the old EE in the backswing move. Chest going back and staying down doesn't help.
    • Extremely outward path with a very closed club face. Maybe unless you have a stupidly weak grip, like right hand way over top, I don't think the grip is necessary highly correlated to this.
