I restarted playing recently and bought a set of Callaway Fusion knock offs from eBay for $100, not knowing if I were going to continue playing. After playing about 15 rounds with them, I would like to switch to a players iron. I am checking out some used Titleist and Mizunos, forged cb's. Any suggestions? I am not really interested in another set of wide sole game improvers. Thanks!

Big suggestion: go to demo days and hit the players' irons of many companies so you can make the most informed decision you can.

In addition to the Titleist APs and Mizuno MP-57s, you might want to consider Ping i10 and Bridgestone J36. The J36 is nice because you can choose which ones you want to be blades, which cavity backs, and which pocket cavities. The i10s are nice because they make the series beyond the 3-P, so you can be selective about which iron(s)/wedge(s) you want from the set and which from others. The MP-57s are nice period. And there's a full review of the APs on the front page.

I'm a lefty--do many of the companies offer lefty demo sets at these events?

They should. If their website mentions having a left-hand set, they probably have it available with them at a demo day. They wouldn't want to be leaving out 11% of the customer base.

Another set you could look at is the Cobra Pro CBs. They won the players irons category in Golf Magazine's club test, and they look fantastic.

My best recommendation is to go and get fit by a professional fitter. Have them put you on a launch monitor and measure. It is much cheaper to pay the money to get fit, than to buy multiple sets of irons until you find the "one"

Saves money in the long run.

I am in the market for new clubs as well. Currently using Ping Eye2 red dot which were hand me downs. I remember going into a Golf Galaxy and the machine telling me that I have a swing speed for my driver around mid 90's. Should I be getting a stiff flex steel iron set?

Golf Galaxy supposedly offers free fitting service if you buy irons from them. The local Golf Galaxy which I called up said they no longer carry Wilson products which really sucks since I wanted to get fit for the Ci7's. Any other options? When going in for a fitting, do I bring my own clubs in?

The shaft flex for your irons should be based on your iron swing speed, not your driver swing speed. I believe there are guys with drivers in S-Flex and irons in R-Flex, but I can't state for certain who they are. In any case, the flex for each club can be independent.

What other shops are in your area? How competitively priced is your pro shop? Does your pro shop actually support your local pro, or is it owned by someone else? Or, if you wish to purchase from Golf Galaxy, can they order from Wilson? They might not carry them - due to folks not buying them in-store - but maybe they can order a set for you?

When going in for a fitting, do I bring my own clubs in?

That depends on your fitting. If you're buying the clubs, you typically get fit and then order based on your fitting. If you own the clubs and are retro-fitting (say, after a major swing change, a growth spurt, or significant swing speed increase), you probably bring your current set in, but do fitting with other clubs, too.

    • Is it? I bought the Stack radar to replace my PRGR based on what Stack told me! When I am swinging for speed, the PRGR would miss 50%-80% of my backswings due to a higher speed. The stack seldom misses those- at least for me.
    • As an analyst by nature, I would like to compare the scores under both systems. It is something we can easily do if we have the data. I actually thought the new system was less fair to those whose game was on the decline - like mine! Old: Best 10 of last 20 scores with the .96 multiplier. Course handicap excluded course rating and overall par. New: Best 8/20. Course handicap includes course rating -par. My understanding is Stableford caps scores at Net double bogey like stroke play. If so, handicap should be slower to rise because you are only using 8 versus 10 scores. If I am missing something, I am curious enough to  want to understand what that may be. My home course tees that I play are 72.1/154 now. My best score out here is 82. When my game started to decline, my handicap didn’t budge for 13 rounds because of good scores in my first 8! I know I am an anomaly but my handicap has increased almost 80% in the past few years (with only a few rounds this year). For a few months I knew I was losing every bet because my game was nowhere near my handicap. I suspect I have steamrolled a few nuances but that shouldn’t matter much. When I have modeled this with someone playing the same tees and course, one good round, or return to form, will immediately reduce the handicap by some amount.
