Besides the fact that the SM puts more spin on the ball, do these two play the same? Which one will be more versatile all around?

Posted
While the SM does spin the ball more than the 200 series, its not for an indefinite amount of time. I have a 50* 200 series and a 54*,58* SM, and I find that after buying them at the same time they seem to spin the same amount. My advice: get the 200 series then rag on your buddies for needing square grooves to spin it.

Im debating the spin milled versus the 200 series as well. Leaning towards the 200's though after hitting my fathers and seeing how well they sit down on the green. Not to hijack the thread but can someone comment on how long the oil can finish last on these wedges or if it wears at all??

Edit: Nevermind, found my answer. Forgot about that nifty search button :)

If you play a 60* wedge as well get the 200 series, if you don't get the SM.

The big difference is in the partial wedge shot, the SM gets them to really grip.

I found them to be identical clubs - apart from the grooves. The extra spin I got from the SM increased the versitility but not by much. Only thing i'd say is 14 degrees of bounce might be a little tricky to open up around the greens. Great for bunkers though. I had 54.14 in a SM and got frustratated with the thick bounce around the greens.

I co-sign this very accurate post! IMO, get a 200 series. I used to have a SM 56/14 and I had much the same issues with it that hawkee had. They do putt more spin on a ball than the 200, but not

that much more..Plus when you add that with the balls those things chew up it makes them not worth the investment. IMO, to get the most out of a vokey, it shouldnt have any more than 12 degrees of bounce. (i dont think newer vokeys come with 12 bounce anymore so it might not even be an option) I carry a 48/6, 52/8, and a 56/10 and find them all very versatile clubs. Im not going to lie, the 10 bounce on the 56 does hurt me from the sand, sometimes, but not to were its crippling.

can you elaborate on that?? I love the vokeys and am about to grab a spin milled 56 but am really confused about which bounce would be best. the 14 bounce seems really high and then 10 really low. My sand play sucks right now - so something that would make it easier to deal with that part of the game would be welcome for sure just not sure if that lies with the bounce of the club??

If you're focusing on the sand trap, get the 14 degree bounce, it makes it easier, it doesn't dig as much.

The 56.10 is a very good sand wedge too and maybe a little more versatile. Good from the typical sand that most courses seem to have. I’ve only seen a couple places where the 14 degree bounce would have been nice from the trap. Depends where you play and how you swing though. Spin mill in the lob wedge is great.

The 200 series and the spin miled wdges both have U(square) grooves. The spin milled wedge is just cut with a circular saw that gives it a tighter edge on the grooves.

    • Day 38 (18 Dec 25) - got out in the backyard with grandson this afternoon.  We got into a little game of pitching the ball from about 25yds to a target point just off the asphalt lane behind the backyard.  Goal - just clear it with a quick hop and stop.  Focused on using the wedge swing motion I was talking with the course pro yesterday….smooth and thru just bruising the grass.  In addition to a concentrated focus on technique, it also called for a quiet mind locked in on target point.  Rehearsed this with both the 50° and 55° wedges.
    • I listened to the Shaun Webb one about the swing coach app. Sounds like a great thing and will (hopefully) be very useful for me. I do think the hosts are underestimating where AI could be in a few years. Right now it's just regurgitating stuff that it has been told or it has scrubbed from somewhere else and a human guiding things will be quite a lot more helpful than just the AI, but it's going to keep developing and it will reach the stage where it's figuring this stuff out on its own. Time will come when it will have you do a TPI style screen and take various height/arm length/leg length etc. measurements, have you tell it some history and your time constraints and goals and what not and it will watch a video of your swing face on and DTL and it will know exactly what you need to work on.
    • I found it entertaining, but the announcing was lousy.  How did the measuring on the final shot start with Rory being closer and being told he won, and then with no explanation it turns out Scottie won?  Weird.
    • Day 128 12-18 Worked on rotation and getting to lead side. Still working on the flow feeling while doing that. Recorded swings.
    • IMO-the only thing entertaining was the relay race. Everything else was excruciatingly boring...or just  stupid, like the 14-club thing. Watching guys blade wedges into the water over and over is not at all interesting.
