This past weekend, a friend of mine and I went to a golf fitness assessment - it was somewhat like a demo day, but instead of hitting the latest irons or newest drivers, we were taken through various fitness tests by two representatives of a golf-specific personal training company (I think one of them was the owner). Now, I take my exercise pretty seriously, and I believe I'm working on the right things. My exercise is targeted at improving my golf.

So, how did the fitness evaluation come out? My golf fitness handicap is an 18.0 - better than my SCGA handicap, but not what I thought it would be.

For some of the parts they tested, I failed miserably. For others, I did OK, but not great. For some other ones, I did great: my total external rotation for my right shoulder is at the PGA Tour average - not bad. My internal hip rotation is above the PGA Tour average. But bragging aside, they did point out several types of flexibility, stability, balance, and posture on which I could improve.

The disparity in different types of exercises - including some muscles on which one type of flexibility is past the PGA Tour average and others is downright sedentary - leads me to believe that either my exercise routine is incomplete or that I'm not doing something correctly. As such, I'm thinking of going to a fitness professional for at least one training session.

Has anyone done golf-specific personal training, and if so, what are your views on it?

I've looked at My TPI, and its various exercises, but I'm thinking of getting a session with a professional to know what I'm doing right or wrong, and to get expert advice on which exercises to do. Then I can work on these on my own (gym, my place, etc) and go back a few months later to follow-up. I figure this isn't significantly different (in concept) than getting a golf lesson from a pro, practicing, and then going back for a follow-up. Am I wrong on this?

Definitely know where you're coming from.

I recently started a membership at a facility started by the guy also founded TPI and it's already working great.

I think what you want is a fitness resource that can utilize MyTPI (or something similar) rather than relying on the web site alone.

I'm definitely in favor of this type of program (and yes the kool-aid tastes good) over haphazard lessons with a driving range pro once every couple of weeks or months or so. The fitness, coupled with consistent swing review, is fantastic.

Yeah, the guys I'm looking at going to are TPI Certified, level 2. I'm not completely sure what it means, but it seems to be a good thing,

Well, I'll probably still take my golf lessons from my instructor as needed. Admittedly, I'm partially worried that my swing may fall apart when I get fit, so I'll need another lesson to take advantage of my to-be-newfound fitness.

Actually, I'd like to know how often you go and how often you work on what you go over, fitness wise, between sessions. Also, what sorts of results did you see? Did you gain consistency? Distance? I've got the endurance (I can walk 36 holes and still feel good on the last green) and some consistency, but I lack distance.

    • Day 430 - 2025-12-04 Slow motion backswings (with chippy shots) with AlmostGolf balls.
    • Day 24 (4 Dec 25) - Spent about an hour working with the new 55° wedge in the backyard.  Kept all shots to under 20yds.  Big focus - not decelerating thru downswing and keeping speed up with abbreviated backswing.  Nothing like hitting a low flighted chip with plenty of check spin and then purpose to float a pitch of similar distance.  
    • Day 114 12-4 Put some work in on backswing, moving the hips correctly, then feeling over to lead side. Didn't hit any balls was just focused on keeping flowy and moving better. I'll probably do another session tonight and add in some foam balls.
    • Didn't say anything about your understanding in my post.  Well, if you are not insisting on alignment with logic of the WHS, then no.  Try me/us. What do you want from us then?? You are not making sense. You come here and post in an open forum, question a system that is constructed with logic, without using any of your own and then give us a small window of your personal experience to support your narrative which at first sight does not makes sense.  I mean, if you are a point of swearing then I would suggest you cut your losses and humor a more gullible audience elsewhere. Good heavens.
