Just came off the course today, I shot a weak 79 with 7 three putts and a four putt.....not good at all.
Any help would be great.

I honestly would have never thought a 79 is possible with 7 three putts and a 4 putt. You've proved me wrong.

Maybe he only played nine holes.

To the OP, you've got to give us more information. For example: 1) how are you missing your putts? 2) what are you trying to do with your putts? 3) what's your pre-shot routine? You'll probably also have to give us some information because, quite frankly, a 79 with 7 three-putts and a four-putt (that's nine wasted strokes right there) doesn't seem like a reasonable score. Tell the doubters why they're wrong - you'll get more help.

You are very right.

Also: are you trying to attack the hole with your putts? (being very agressive) or do you tend to guide them in with the break? What distances are you most often missing your putts at?

-my advice would be-chip 'em in

It is a very short course that a long hitter can have a field day on. I drove the green on 4 par fours and chipped in for 1 eagle and rolled a 5 footer in for another eagle.
off the tee I was on and long game was nice, but my putter failed me. I guess i was being too aggressive on the green.

That can be it, coming up short is prob the best, because I think on any day, a soft roller will come up shorter but closer than an agressive putt will. You must be bombing it past the hole to have 3 & 4 Putts.

I smell handicap inflation, but whatever.
Practice.
Nobody can teach you how to hit a putt, you have to learn yourself.

First Make sure your setting up and gripping everything correctly. If you want some good explanations go to videojug.com. He really explains grips and technique well. Second Practice! Practice! Practice! I've become a good putter but it was through hundreds of putts that I was able to learn how to play slopes, speed, and distance. Just keep playing and don't rush into putts, take time and look around the whole green and look at how it changes.

One of the things I teach is what I like to call, "The string drill." Take two new pencils and a length of string at least 5 ft. long. Tie the string around the erasers of the pencils to make the string suspend off the ground about 4-5 inches. Place the pencils in the putting green so the string is taught, and take your stance with your putter head directly below the string. The goal of this drill is to keep the putter head very low to the ground on the back, and through strokes. This allows you to get a better feel for each distance of putt, and keep the stroke more consistent. Also, another tip I give is to count to three... One, being the impact of the putt, then count 2...3... and then look up. By keeping your head still through the stroke, you are able to minimize your body movement, and thus achieve a more consistent stroke.

I hope this helps... let me know if it does!

IMO, true putting struggles come from simply not trusting your alignment and stroke. When you putt, you're like a little robot. Picture yourself as a completely fixed object, and you align your entire body/self/stroke to the target. Once you've done that and addressed the ball, your line is fixed, do not try to change it via the stroke. The only thing you do at that pointis decide how hard to hit it and, again, you must trust the pre-shot read and feel.

No where does the Vision54 idea of THINK BOX and PLAY BOX come into play more than putting. Read your putt from behind, take some practice strokes, feel the speed, decide on your line and speed. When you get over the ball, you have to go into "robot" mode - just make the stroke.

Nothing in the swing is done at the expense of balance.

    • I'm not sure you're calculating the number of strokes you would need to give correctly. The way I figure it, a 6.9 index golfer playing from tees that are rated 70.8/126 would have a course handicap of 6. A 20-index golfer playing from tees that are rated 64/106 would have a course handicap of 11. Therefore, based on the example above, assuming this is the same golf course and these index & slope numbers are based on the different tees, you should only have to give 5 strokes (or one stroke on the five most difficult holes if match play) not 6. Regardless, I get your point...the average golfer has no understanding of how the system works and trying to explain it to people, who haven't bothered to read the documentation provided by either the USGA or the R&A, is hopeless. In any case, I think the WHS as it currently is, does the best job possible of leveling the playing field and I think most golfers (obviously, based on the back & forth on this thread, not all golfers) at least comprehend that.

    • Yes it's true in a large sample like a tournament a bunch of 20 handicaps shouldn't get 13 strokes more than you. One of them will have a day and win. But two on one, the 7 handicap is going to cover those 13 strokes the vast majority of the time. 20 handicaps are shit players. With super high variance and a very asymmetrical distribution of scores. Yes they shoot 85 every once in a while. But they shoot 110 way more often. A 7 handicap's equivalent is shooting 74 every once in a while but... 86 way more often?
