Wow. Classic Phil. He was going to make a 3 or a 6 on that hole. That's just his style and it paid off this time. Amazing. Felt bad for Pampling but he really choked it away on 17 (what the heck was that off the tee??? He was so lucky to get a 5). But I actually felt worse for Tim Clark. Has never won and he played great.

It was good to see Phil win with The U.S. Open on the horizon. The shot at the 72nd hole was pretty clutch, but he won't do as well if he finds himself in those situations at Torrey Pines.

Hopefully Lefty will play ok this week as well and inch even closer to Woods in the FedEx Cup standings. It would be nice to see a little battle down the stretch between the two.

Awards, Achievements, and Accolades

I recorded it on my DVR and noticed that it had gone 1 hr over so I figured it went to a playoff. When he blocked the tee shot on 18, I knew he melted down and that the playoff was going to be between Pampling and Clark. Both my wife & I gasped out loud when we heard it hit the tree and then saw it land on the green. One of the great shots I have ever seen. I think it needs to be put in perspective that it may be one of the defining shots of Phils's career. Had he gagged on that one, we would be talking about it along with the 06 US Open and he may never have recovered from it. By pulling it off, he may win a few more majors before he is done. Had he choked again, the scar may have been career altering (at least as far as majors go).

Can't wait to go to Torrey and see him play on Thursday. Way to go Phil! Still don't know why my DVR went an hour over.

That gets my vote for shot of the year.Under one tree over another 140 yards with a 52 degree wedge and a 10 yard draw to boot!!!!

Thanks for the details, somehow I missed it at the time in all the excitement - 140 yards indeed! ... quite amazing in the circumstances. That shot took a level of commitment and nerve that is hard to imagine.

Yes, that was classic Phil, favorite son around these parts ..... And whatever you think of his decision-making at times, he's always entertaining. That man is great for the game of golf.

According to the announcers, that shot was 121 yards. That said, Phil is a freak. His swing speed on his flop shots has been timed at 88MPH. Freaking Phil.

    • 3 rainouts in a row….that’s SAD Sorry, I’m in MI or I would take you up on a round.
    • Day 3:  I tried to hit a bucket at the range but an 80 year old man (he told me his age, showed me his knee replacement scars, told me all about his chronic low back pain, etc) couldn’t pass up the opportunity to mansplain to me every little thing I’m doing wrong.  Dude, it’s my third frickin day.  I know I need to twist my hips more, I know I need to keep my head/chest down and not pop up, I know I need to hit through the ball and follow through further, yada yada yada.  I know.  That’s exactly what I’m trying to work on.  How about you tell me or show me how to do those things instead of telling me to watch Iron Byron videos?  Rough day.
    • Day 132: 5/7/24 Full Speed Spectrum Training session 8/24. 7th training program overall.    Another slow session but 4 mph faster than my last session, which was my slowest ever. Going to the doctor on Friday to check on pulled neck muscle.
    • Day 26: Did full swing practice after work. First 15 balls were working on top of the backswing feel, and then tried to incorporate transition feel into the next 15 balls. A's, although this will be my last season of being a fan as they leave for Las Vegas (by way of Sacramento for a few seasons). Hard to see myself rooting for the Giants, but if that's the only MLB in the Bay Area, I guess I might get on board.
    • My two cents? Don't. As a beginner that's interested in learning about the golf swing, you'll find yourself consuming a lot of information, most of which isn't even relevant to your own swing. You need to learn you can't think your way to a good golf swing. Focus on the one thing that you're working on and doing that on every swing, come what may. And remember, mishits happen.
