Good Starter set?

Hello,

I was wondering if anyone has any expirence with the company; Founders Club? I am looking for a starter set of club's when I came across these:

From what the sales guy told me was for the cost, Founders Club is the best you can get. For the quality of there clubs you would have to pay quite a bit more in another brand to compare it to. However you can never really trust sales guys . So does anyone have anything to say about them? Good or Bad? Also if anyone could reccomend something else around the same price range (preferrably from the site listed above) that would be great.

Never heard of them.

My starter one I had about 3 months ago was the Golden Bear GX2's.

Great set of clubs...cost around $150-$200. Comes with 1W,3W,5W,3i hybrid, 4i hybrid, 5-pw, and bag.

I loved them.

just letting you know the, irons in this set are graphite shafted not steel and if you have a higher swing speed this might not be the choice for you, my best advice is to go to a golf store and demo clubs, take a roll of duct tape with you, and when you demo a club put a strip of duct tape on the face of the club, when you hit the ball if will leave a mark on the tape showing where you hit the ball, you will want to go with the set you hit consistently in the middle :)

I would just about guess, that nearly anywhere you go to demo clubs, if its not in someones backyard, that the seller will tape your clubs properly. No offense, but I couldn't imagine hitting balls with duct tape on the face of a club. Seriously, have you done this? Maybe I've never heard of this before. . .I would guess thin masking tape would not leave nearly as much residue and you could still see your marks easily. JMO To the threadstarter, if I were you, I'd go to a nice pro shop where they'll let you hit on an actual range, not an indoor hitting mat with computer. Then go to Dick's and get them for cheap, or buy used. Lots of great deals AAAALLL over the place on used clubs. GLUCK

Go to golf town and tell them your situation, they have more than enough to suit your game.

Use masking tape. Duct tape will leave sticky crap.

I would consider a decent used set, demos or close-out. I bought a set of Ram fx-5's for my first set, then I was bitten by the bug! I was told to buy a decent set of irons and start building a set that I will be happy with. As you can see by my signature none of those clubs remain. Luckily I have a 12 year old who is excited about his Ram clubs he got from dad!
I got all my current clubs on close-outs,last years model, and got good deals on them!

I'm from Ontario, Mississauga/oakville area to be exact. I've also been hearing good things about the top-flite brand. Would they be better than these "founders club" ?

Founders Club is golftown's own line of clubs that they contract a company to produce. Decent starter sets imo.

That's what I thougth. I read alittle about the history behind Founders club. Apparently they were a top club maker in the mid 90's, but then got sold to some Asia based company, and then Callaway made they way to the top, and Founders Club was scarpped until 2003 when someone else picked them up.

Anyways, I ended up picking up a set of Top-Flite XL5000. I was looking at the Top-Flite SD which has the graphite irons, but settled for the steel Irons because I've head bad things about graphite irons.

I've actually heard of Founders Club. I bought a hybrid at Golf Glalxy a few yrs ago, before I knew more about what I was doing. :)

For a starter set, I think it depends how serious you are and how much you want to spend.

I think Ebay is a craps shoot, and probably not a good idea if you are just starting out.

If you are in Canada, I'm not sure what retailers are available. I would think you could get a complete Wilson set on the lower end, new. Or if you are thinking used, perhaps Callaway preowned.com may be a way to go.
Even their average rated equipment looks good to me. They also sell on ebay, but I think it's cheaper to go to their site.
