First off I know there are thousands of threads on this, I just spent 2 hours searching and reading up on opinions.

I've never had any clubs fitted for me, my current 735's were an ebay purchase, and to be honest if it wasn't for the large some of money I just came by I wouldn't be getting anything else.

But since I'm treating myself to all new Irons, new woods and wedges I'd figured I'd ask some advice on what to hit.

My best friend has the r7tp irons and he loves them, I haven't been able to hit them yet, but from what he has told me after hitting numerous irons they are his favorite.. That puts them at the top of my list of at least clubs to hit. The only thing my friend told me about the r7tp's is they aren't easy to hit, which coming from him (a former college golfer) is saying something.

Other than those, I was looking for suggestions on irons to hit when I go to the store and start looking seriously into this big purchase.

My normal ball flight is medium high, dead straight. My miss hits at least with my irons are either a pull left or a push right. I'm not a long player, I hit my 8 iron 140-150 depending on situation....I"m not really sure about my swing speed but I'm guessing it's somewhere around 95 or so. I'm looking for something that is forgiving on mis hits, but I can still work. I know I'm gonna benefit a ton from the fitting alone, but really need some others to put on my list.

So far:

Taylor Made r7tp
Ping s58/59
Ping G10
Cleveland x20/tour

I think everything you have listed is good, but I would check out the i10's as well, if not instead of the G10's because they are GI, on the brink of SGI. Also I would check out the Bridgestone J36 or the J33, the J33 would be cheaper, but both the J36 and J33 are solid irons.

Here's what I play:

Titleist 907 D2 10.5* UST ProForce V2 76-S | Titleist 906F4 18.5* Aldila VS Proto "By You" 80-S | Titleist 585H 21* Aldila VS Proto "By You" 80-S | Titleist ZB 4-PW TTDG S300 | Bob Vokey Spin Milled Oil Can 54.10 | Bob Vokey Spin Milled Oil Can 60.08 | Scotty Cameron Red X5 33" |

I am going to suggest against Ping g10s. I don't know about the other three you listed, but g10s are game improvement clubs - if you want forgiving but workability, and given your handicap, I'd suggest getting a forgiving set of players' irons. I would suggest considering the Ping i10, Bridgestone J36 series (very customizable), and Mizuno MP-57.

There are some very good used irons on ebay that are like new. Check out golfreview.com For the money, I am very high on MacGregor Irons. A few years ago, they really started making great irons again.

Check out the m565s. They are pretty high tech with reduced offset. I love these things, and they are long.
Whats in my bag:

Fairway/Hybrid: 15 & 19 degree Nickent 3dx Utility

    • Is it? I bought the Stack radar to replace my PRGR based on what Stack told me! When I am swinging for speed, the PRGR would miss 50%-80% of my backswings due to a higher speed. The stack seldom misses those- at least for me.
    • As an analyst by nature, I would like to compare the scores under both systems. It is something we can easily do if we have the data. I actually thought the new system was less fair to those whose game was on the decline - like mine! Old: Best 10 of last 20 scores with the .96 multiplier. Course handicap excluded course rating and overall par. New: Best 8/20. Course handicap includes course rating -par. My understanding is Stableford caps scores at Net double bogey like stroke play. If so, handicap should be slower to rise because you are only using 8 versus 10 scores. If I am missing something, I am curious enough to  want to understand what that may be. My home course tees that I play are 72.1/154 now. My best score out here is 82. When my game started to decline, my handicap didn’t budge for 13 rounds because of good scores in my first 8! I know I am an anomaly but my handicap has increased almost 80% in the past few years (with only a few rounds this year). For a few months I knew I was losing every bet because my game was nowhere near my handicap. I suspect I have steamrolled a few nuances but that shouldn’t matter much. When I have modeled this with someone playing the same tees and course, one good round, or return to form, will immediately reduce the handicap by some amount.
