Ok. I'm a fair beginner at this, but I'm having way too much fun.

When you go to a baseball game, you can mark each batter with a K for strike, BB for walk, plus you can mark around the bases for how far each base runner proceeds. You guys know what I'm talking about, right?

Is there something like that for golf? I see the scorecard, and all you put down is the final number: 4. That's it. It doesn't say anything about if your drive was in the fairway. Did you 2-putt? Hit a bunker? There doesn't seem to be any way to mark it to give you an accurate picture to reflect on after the round. Just that number (4) sitting there fat, dumb, and happy.

Is there a way to take shorthand notes on each hole?

Thanks.

I tried keeping stats once. It didn't work out.

I thought that little notebook had it all. Tee shot, second shot, third shot, then it went on to putting with notes for special events like bunkers and up and ins. Unfortunately, a one hole chart for me might go something like this. Tee shot: pull hook Second shot: so-so 7 iron short Third shot: OK SW to fifteen feet Putt: just missed on left Putt: just missed on left Putt: just missed on left Putt: just missed on left ... I basically keep a separate scorecard for tracking the stats that you are talking about. I keep track of fairways hit (if missed was it left or right), shots to the green (same as GIR, kinda), and number of putts. I don't track sand/wedge saves too much but it is another common statistic. There are free online services where you can record and track your scores and statistics. I've seen some where you can also record length of drive, length of first putt, weather conditions, etc. So yes, you really can have almost as much fun with statistics as you can with baseball.

Sure there is. If you hit the fairway mark a _. If you hit the green in regulation turn it into a +. Then write down the number of putts on each hole. Then you be able to see what you need to work on.

Sure there is - download this even as a trial. Read the manual for the way I keep score, with added stats, in only two boxes:

This is exactly what I do...except I mark an 'X' in an open spot and put a 'O' around it if I hit the green. Then write down the number of putts. If you don't have room just grab an extra card. There are usually hundreds available at any course.

I will judge my rounds much more by the quality of my best shots than the acceptability of my worse ones.

I track a bunch of stuff, but it takes me 5 boxes per hole.

Score
Fairway (F, L, R, and distance of drive)
GIR (sometimes I put down Shots to Green and then circle it if its a GIR)
Pitches and Chips (number of shots inside 60 yards, not counting putts)
Putts (putts and distance of first putt)

I can easily see an up & down by the 1 in P/C and the 1 in Putts (or a 0 in putts when I'm lucky).
Lastly, I'll put a "P" on the card if there was a penalty stroke, and an S in the P/C box if it was a shot out of the sand. Therefore a 1S in P/C and a 1 in Putts means a Sand Save (don't get too many of those).

I use the scorecard and just use the blank lines underneath. If i am with someone then I just score on a separate card and place my scores and statistics in to my website. Once I get the wap side done, I might not use a scorecard, I will just enter on the course using my cell.

What website do you use?

There should be around 4 Spaces on the scorecard for Names,

On the scorecard i Put my name under that i put GIR (Greens In Regulation) and put an X if I didnt get it on that hole, or a Check if i did. Under GIR, i put F-Way (Fairways Hit) and put and X or a Check,

Beside my score i putt a small little number, which resembles my putts.

I use Intelligolf on my treo.

I really like being able to track how I played. I generally remember the really bad holes, not the good ones.

It can be set up to be just score OR score and putts, OR you can track up to five (5) shots and 2 putts per hole (club, distance, fairway/right/left or short/long/on-right/left of green and whether you left your putt short/long/in - left/right ) for up to 5 players plus a bunch of wagering games. It can track penalties, saves, up/down, bunker shots. It even has a simple distance estimator eg paces to/from 100/150/200/X markers. One can even write notes on each hole for the round.

When playing well, it takes only a short time ( 30 seconds/1 minute ?) to complete all the above information for a single hole. If you are just tracking everyones score, it is 9 key strokes ( score+putts * 4 plus advance to the next hole). About as fast as everyone can tell you their score.

Also displays honors and totals over the course.

It has lots of course scorecards for download with tees, par, handicap, distances, phone number(s) OR create your own. Runs on many PDA and cell phones. (Finally a good use for a cell phone on a golf course )

I have the edition that includes GPS ( don't use as it kills the battery ) and desktop support for graphs, etc. Even can create a html report for each round.

Wow! Lots of information there.

I was originally trying to keep all 4 player's scores on my scorecard, until I realized that I didn't care about what other people were shooting. Not trying to be rude, but I found that by paying attention to others' scores, I stopped concentrating on my own performance and/or I got a little performance anxiety as I was trying to "keep up" with the better players. It just wasn't working out.

So, last time out I tried the method of using the whole scorecard just for me:

STROKES -- overall strokes for hole
GREEN -- how many shots to get onto the green, circled if it is GIR (extremely rare, right now)
PUTTS -- number of putts on the hole
NOTES -- left? right? bunker? water? lost ball? etc

That seemed to work a little easier for me. I found it easier counting strokes as I went along, too. You know, "alright, I hit the green in 3". Mark it down. "3 putt? Ew." Mark it down. "Well, I guess that was a 6 overall, then."

Thanks for the tips. I'm going to keep using that from now on.
