It seems the consistant part of my game is taking large chunks of the ground while using irons.

It's a bad habit, but it doesn't seem to affect distance.

I can hit my 56 degree around 110
Ping i2 wedge = 130
9 iron = ~140

Sometimes it can really slow my follow through, but still catch the ball clean and hit it far.

It's a bad habit and sometimes I feel bad leaving a clean patch @ a driving range.

Thanks!

Divots are important and necessary, it shows you are hitting down on the ball and putting backspin on it. It sounds like the ball is too far back in the stance. Try moving in foward so the lowest part of the swing arc won't be so deep, this should give you higher ball flight also.

Keep your hands well ahead of the clubhead. Do this at address if necessary to engrain the feeling of 'lag'.

Ive never taken much of a divot and i get pretty good ball flight and spin. 6 iron and above i dont take a divot at all..It depends on how you swing i suppose.

I don't think that a divot is absolutely necessary if you can pick the ball clean. But the margin of error is tight so hitting down on the ball and taking a divot is a precautionary move for us mere mortals.

I was taking huge divots and at times hitting fat. Took some vid of my swing and found that I was not making a good turn. I was also bending my left knee just a bit towards the target. One I got a good turn I started picking it a "little" cleaner.

    • Day 555 - 2026-04-09 Played 17 holes (we skipped 6 to pass a group letting us through). Hit more good shots than I was expecting. 😄
    • Day 233 4-9 flow drill while focusing on better hip/chest rotation. Used mirror.
    • Comment:  Huh, I practiced regularly until 1/31, got busy in Feb-Mar (as I knew I would), and got reinspired today.  I have done some intermittent practice in the past two months, but let's get back on the daily practice wagon. Day 1, April 9 2026.  I worked on some pelvis turn limiting drills, doing one for several iterations before context switching to hit a few balls slowly (trying to retain that feeling), and repeating.
    • I’m thinking maybe Jason Day read my post. He’s sitting a -3 two off Rory and Burns.
    • Is it only the weekend broadcasts that have a low commercial count?  I feel like it has been a long while since I last watched a Thursday of the Masters, so maybe my recollection is off.  I feel today has a lot more than four minutes per hour of commercials, and far fewer of the fun stories they tell during the Sunday broadcast.
