We have two 5 club challenges at my Club, the scores tend to be reasonably good considering. Really Benefits lower handicaps cos they can hit a wider variety of shots with each club.

5 CLUBS - 4 Wood, 5 iron, 8 iron, Gap Wedge, Putter

You find yourself experimenting with shots you wouldnt normally hit, i usually play well and around my handicap.

Seems to be a consensus so far about what clubs to use..

I was thinking of using 2hybrid, 5, 7, P and putter. but 5,8,52 sounds like a more flexiable setup.

I was also thinking limiting myself to only 1 ball entire round as well..but that might make me try to hard.

See the thing i dont like about having the driver is that you can only get one shot out of it. If you're only taking 5 i would want to pick a club more versatile. And it takes a little of the fun out of it too, i think. I would like leaving myself short on alot of holes and still see if i can scratch out pars.

You shouldn't try to battle out holes, just for the sake of it. If you can make it easier on yourself...do it!

Par 3, you can use the 7i. Par 4, Driver, then 7i (most of the time) Par 5, Driver, then 3H.

I've only ever used 7 clubs, and I really only need 6.

I'm a beginner.

I don't use my driver, since I can't hit it cleanly, comfortably, or consistantly. So, I leave it at home.

Only clubs I use:
3W
5I
7I
9I
PW
SW
Putter

If I had a Gap Wedge, I'd replace my two wedges with it (for this scenario, anyway). I hardly ever use my Sand Wedge. Really, I should be using my 60* Lob wedge instead, but I'm just not comfortable with it yet. I only use the Sand Wedge for getting some ups and overs. Next least used would be the 9I. I have an 8I that I play around with from time to time. So, I'd probably replace the 7I and the 9I with the 8I and call it a day.

For 5 club Golf:
3W
5I
8I
Gap
Putter

Seems like you don't need anything else. A decent shot off the tee, plus a decent fairway wood for the long Par 5. A long/mid Iron for just about everything else. The short Iron for getting onto the green, laying up, or bump and run from the fringe. The wedge and the putter.

Seems not only doable, but light and comfortable if you are walking.

10.5* Driver (don't really ever use it)
3w, 5w
23* hybrid
5i through PW, SW
60* Wedge.....................................................................mellojoe

Apart from really long holes, you dont need to carry a driver, its the least versatile club in the bag, only 2 possible shots - Drive and Low Punch of the floor, whereas 5 and 7 irons low punch bump and runs, par 3's etc. unless its a really long or a particularly wet and windy day i wouldnt carry a driver.

I certainly wouldnt carry a lob wedge, 52 is plenty and it means you donjt have to hit 7i from 110yards.

i would consider 6 /8 irons instead, but really depends on the course. any 350 hole, 5 wood then 6 or 8 iron.

Battling out the holes isnt a bad thing, works on shots you may get if you hit a poor tee shot, help you react well when those bad shots are in an important event, off exactly the same handicap as me, you dont need a driver or lob wedge, and i dont think the lack of clubs will effect you greatly.
