All, We hear so much about game improvement and super game improvement irons these days. I was wondering at what score would you start to think that those aren't the best way to go. Go straight up clubs and get better that way?

When do game improvement type of clubs become a disadvantage?

Breaking 100? 90?

Well, with my SGIs, I could get haphazard with my long irons and still get an OK shot. But that's all I'd get - an OK shot. My mental game suffered - I got in the habit of "well, I'll send a 6-iron in that direction." Not good when the 6-iron is 135 yards!

Now that I've got swing-improvement irons (aka Players' Irons) I've stuck it close with a 5-iron on times I've gone for the flag. I still rate which pins to go for and which are sucker pins, but I've stuck it real close on a few occasions. I have to pay attention when swinging. I can't get away with a haphazard 9-iron anymore, much less a 4-iron. And you know what? My scores have improved, taking into consideration only courses that I've played a few times.

I'd say game improvement hurts you at whatever point your abilities and consistency enable you to have more shot options.

A good example of this for me was with offset on clubs. Once I developed to the point where I could....within reason....shape my shots a bit...the offset was a hindrance.

Were I to put a number on it, I'd say once someone starts to play to a 15 hcp or so.

I can rest assured that i'd have been way more frustrated starting out without nice cavity backed irons...and most likely will never stray away from them.

Until you can play poorly and still score 75 I'd stay stick with some sort of game improvement type iron, no need to go to the most forgiving clubs around but use something easier to hit than blades.

Don't get me wrong, if you enjoy using blades because they feel "buttery soft" on the one in ten you hit in the middle whilst "working" the ball left to right, right to left, high and low en route to another 84 go right ahead if it makes you feel good. I'll just keep on using my game improvement bats to carve it all over the place while having another 75
