Hi everyone...

I have a major case of golf elbow... It was abit sore so i tried rubbing the tendon and now it's swollen.... in a really bad way...

I know I have to rest, ice, compress and elevate and strengthen my wrist muscles but equipment wise is there anything I can do? Sensicore, graphite shaft?

Take a bunch of Advil...and try to totally isolate out that arm that is sore. For me...that included using my computer mouse in my left hand and using a Microsoft 'natural' keyboard that is more ergo.

I would wear the tendon compressor all day and night long...

Graphite shaft...I don't think it is going to help much....as I think it comes from digging in and taking a divot at impact. Therefore, I don't plan to hit any off the driving range mats for many months ahead even after it is better.

I also was not able to go to the driving range for four months...playing only once a week. Rest is good.


Streatching exercises will really help....rotating the wrist while your arms are extended forward is good. And don't open any jars at home...that is rough...have to get a jar opener.

Good luck... And if anyone else has suggestions...I would be interested in case I get it again.

Ive never heard of golf elbow..I would assume the condition would arise in your trailing elbow, correct?

Hi everyone...

Go to an orthopedic surgeon

now . Nobody here is qualified to answer that. You can screw around on your own with home and miracle remedies like I did. Get the cortisone shots and if you're luck you won't need the surgery.

I had tennis elbow in both elbows, even though I don't play tennis. It is a little different than golf elbow because of which tendon is inflamed but the symptoms are similar. My orthopedic guy who happens to also be a avid golfer treated mine and both are in good shape now. You won't believe what he did and even he said it sounds like voodoo but it appears to work. He stuck a needle multiple times into my elbow and just poked it around. He said it was a variation of injecting your own blood into the elbow to help it heal. The sticks cause it to bleed inside and this is supposed to help the healing. He was almost hesitant to suggest it but he knew I wanted to play. I said what the hell, lets try it, he did it and it worked.

I got tendonitis from pitching in baseball, and I went to the doctor. He recommended tons of stretches, etc. which I never did.

That was 4 year ago, and my arm has still not recovered. Listen to the doctor. ;)

Well I have it as we speak. I did see the doctor but he didn't tell me anything I already havent been doing.

1) Obviously no golf playing for a few weeks to a couple months depending how bad your condition is.

2) Ice for up to the 1st 72 hours 20 mins on, 20 mins off...Grab an ace bandage to help support the muscles & tendons. Ibuprofin 200 mg 3 times a day, one with each meal. Or alieve twice a day. Ive also been taking 1500 mg of vitamin c day as well.

3) Try and use the arm very little, mine was so bad I couldnt even lift a cup of coffee w/out intenes pain. So become a lefty for a bit. After 72 hours switch to a heating pad unless you still have alot of swelling/pain then continue the ice.

4) After you have no pain or very little start stretching & light excercise.

It could take a couple weeks or or months to heal depending hwo bad your condition is. Mine after 2 weeks is just starting to feel slightly better but still have a ways to go. Basically golfer elbow or medial epicondylitis is a strain or tear in the muscle tendon. I feel you pain it sucks but hang in there. Just nurse the hell outa of it. If you cant move your arm @ all then you may need surgey, which is worst case scenario. Only a doctor after taking xrays/mri could tell this. In most cases above is the normal treatment.


To answer your ? I dont know if there is any equipment to avoid this...Its generally tendonitis is form overusing the muscles. If your playing alot tone it down and remeber to warm up very well prior to swining..Gluck

I have had chronic problems with this for several years. My doc said cortisone a bad idea. He feels this is one of the reasons there are so many torn tendons in pro sports these days. The doc helped me develop my routine. Ice before and after play or practice, wrist, forearm and elbow. Stretching several times a day, simple and only takes moments, strengthening off season. I believe limiting knock down and stinger type shots helps. Sawing off your follow through adds stress. I hit more draws and emphasize a full relaxed release when it starts coming back. I do feel graphite has helped also, less vibration and less weight. My doc advised complete rest for only one week, no golf but other activity to help maintain muscle tone.

Did anyone wear a compression tennis/golfer elbow device and did it help?

Also....Advil or Alleve? Any difference between the two?

When I had my aliment...I found my swing tempo to improve as I was doing a lot of mirror work since I wasn't able to work out on the range. Also taking a tad less of a divot these days which is a good thing for the long run.

Glad I am all over the aliment...

Four years ago I had the same problem.

I went to graphite shaft (in my irons) and never had any problems after. The pain is usually in the left elbow (right handed). It comes from the vibration of the club when you hit the ground. It follows up the shaft and into the top hand on the club (left arm). I play 80+ round per year and the graphite shaft did the trick...

Thanks everyone for the information.

I want to see a doctor and got some bad news... seems like graphite shafts will help but the scan show bad tears for me... so i'll be out for awhile...

They have been started on strengthening exercises for the forearm muscles...

    • Going to Florida for the usual February golf trip, and with our current weather, that date won't get here soon enough. Heading to Augusta GA for the Tuesday Master's practice round, will definitely get some golf in while I'm in the area for a few days. Hope to be able to catch up with @coachjimsc if he's around. Then it's back to Scotland first of July.  Playing 7 new courses, can't wait for that.  Then somewhere after that is the Rhode Island CC Member-Guest and then my normal October golf trip to Myrtle Beach.  
    • It sucks to carry around a lot of water, but ideally it should be way more than we think.  I buy those gallon jugs of water and hang them from my pushcart when I walk. I agree with the electrolytes as well. You don't just sweat out water, but you lose electrolytes as well. 
    • A 2010 study from the Journal of Strength & Conditioning Research compares the effects of different pre-round stretch routines for competitive golfers. Active Dynamic Warm-up: Swing Medicus driver, hit 3 shots each with selected clubs. Passive Static Stretches: Various athletic stretches such as hamstrings, chest stretch and reverse trunk twist. The subjects were collegiate golfers with a HDCP index of 5 or less who engaged regularly in strength and fitness routines. All golfers had two test days: one with active dynamic (AD) warmup, a second with AD followed by static stretches (SS). The results were then compared, within golfers and across golfers. For performance testing after the warmups, golfers hit three driver shots at time 0, 15, 30 and 45 minutes after the warmup. The study shows that static stretch formats produced poorer performance outcomes in the four measures shown in Table 5, which shows Time Zero results. The performance deficits under the PSS protocol decreased over time. Some suggestions on why the passive protocol was tied to lower performance than the active protocol: The passive stretches routine induced excessive range of motion,  basically producing wobbles in the golf swing. Other research indicates that the stretching produced slack in the tendons, lessening the amount of muscle force that could be transferred into the shot. One caveat: The study had good scientific controls and balancing of treatments (test routines). This was, however, an exploratory study and raises as many questions as it answers. Also, although the study was done back in 2010, it is still cited as a primary work in recent reviews. A quick online search did not reveal any follow-ups on the study.     • I have trouble with vertigo on occasion, but have gotten nutritional and biofeedback tips to keep it at bay. Dehydration can help trigger v-like symptoms so one recommendation, along with maintaining overall hydration, is to start with 8 oz. of water early in the morning. A meta-analysis on Golf As Physical Activity indicated that golf is rated as a moderately intensive physical activity. This scientific literature review came from the University of Edinburgh. The physical activity level ties into hydration. A former university colleague was a marathon runner who had published a couple of articles on endurance training. He likewise said that golf was a moderate physical activity especially when the round stretched past  the two-hour mark. For hydration he recommended switching from water to electrolyte drink on the back nine (past two hour point of exercise) to prevent cramping. At the two-hour point of moderate activity, water starts flushing electrolytes out of the body, which can lead to fatigue and cramping. (I have had trouble with leg cramps in the past during exertion.) During a round, I start out with water on the front nine and switch to sports drink on the back nine. If the day is unusually hot, I may drink 8 oz. of Pedialite concentrate before going to the course. Maintaining overall hydration plus on-course boosters keeps me going.
    • Personally I’d try booking direct first - either via the Vidanta golf reservations number/email or through the resort concierge - especially for Christmas/New Year. Vidanta’s main courses (Greg Norman and Nicklaus designs) are popular and can book out fast this time of year, so direct often gives you the best shot at your preferred tee times.
