Now I have a set of cheap Golden Bear wedges, and I really like them. But I really want a legitimate, high-end(but within decent price range -- can be used) 56* wedge.

I've read plenty of problems with Vokey's rusting, which I don't want. CG12's seem to be a bit pricey...any ideas?

I really like my Nike SV Tour wedges. They go for about $89 for chrome and $99 for black satin. Nice feel (soft, but not mushy) and spin. Really nice wedges for the price.

The oil can vokeys are designed to rust, ive never heard or seen any of the tour chrome finished ones rusting with regular use.

The cg10's are good wedges if you're worried about the price of the cg12. You can probably get one new for under $100 i imagine. Any new vokey is going to be at least $110, and i wouldnt recommend buying them used without close in-person inspection of the club. Never buy a oil can finish vokey preowned.

Can someone fill me in why they would design a club to RUST?

Local here - Vokey oil can new 109.00

My problem is I only know I have a sand wedge becasue it says so, been looking at wedges and trying to make heads or tails of angle and bounce.

Would love to have a better understanding of angle and what that is - SW, PW, LW and bounce. I have much to learn.

Rust is not a bad thing all the time. Rust bluing on firearms is a highly sought after finish that costs much more than a new Scotty Cameron putter, if done by someone who knows what they are doing.

In this instance I think the idea is appearance more than anything. I have often heard so much attention paid to how a club looks, I couldn't care less myself.

Rust reduces glare. Some say it enhances playability, enables a softer feel around the greens. Most of us amateurs couldn't tell the difference in the feel - so having a wedge/club that rusts may just be a personal preference. A lot of them look great.

I have a couple of vokeys (chrome, Spin-Milled), they didn't rust but they have worn. The sole and the impact area on the face have turned a yellowish colour, which goes a nasty green/brown after prolonged use (though I try to clean them after every shot, it doesn't always work that way!).

I read somewhere (here?) that Spin-Milled lose their effect after 20 rounds and should be replaced. That's not very cost effective but a lot of Pro's change them every week. I had mine maybe 15 months - i get a little check when conditions permit and a hit a good quality strike (but i'm not a spin player) - they have worn a lot and i've replaced one with a Ping Tour-W wedge. The 58 may be changed soon too.

I like my Mizuno wedges. I think they cost me about $100 each. And they have a couple of options for the 56: MP-T 56-10, 56-14 ; MP-R 56-10, 56-13. MP-R available in two colors, too. I have the MP-T 56-14, and I love it. Much more than my old Vokeys, which are now part of my loaner set.

That having been said, if you have wedges you like, why do you want new ones?

I always thought PW, SW, and LW were all just general descriptions. The loft of the wedge is really what matters. A sand wedge typically runs from 54 to 58 degrees, for example. The second item, the bounce angle, generally effects how the club interacts with the turf.

Without getting to technical, a wedge with less bounce will dig, while one with more will "bounce" off of the turf or sand more easily because it has more surface area on the bottom of the club. The bounce on a 56 SW will usually range from 10 to 16 degrees. 14 seems to be standard.

Absolutely true. I can certainly feel the difference in my irons versus my starter set.

Best of luck with the new wedges. Remember to hit them at a demo day or at the store first - there's no sense in buying a wedge you don't like the feel of. That's lots of the fun of a wedge!

That's just it - I haven't a clue as to what I should be looking at to replace my SW (worst club in my bag right now - I detest hitting it) and then what angle for a LW and PW etc.

I am decent with my irons but wedges kill me.

A LW will usually run from 60 to 64 degrees. The PW will run from anywhere from 46 to 49. A SW with 56 degrees of loft and 14 degrees bounce is probably the standard wedge most players start out with. I did.

Thanks for the help - I can at the least look at something now and make a resonable determination of where it would fit in my bag.

    • Is it? I bought the Stack radar to replace my PRGR based on what Stack told me! When I am swinging for speed, the PRGR would miss 50%-80% of my backswings due to a higher speed. The stack seldom misses those- at least for me.
    • As an analyst by nature, I would like to compare the scores under both systems. It is something we can easily do if we have the data. I actually thought the new system was less fair to those whose game was on the decline - like mine! Old: Best 10 of last 20 scores with the .96 multiplier. Course handicap excluded course rating and overall par. New: Best 8/20. Course handicap includes course rating -par. My understanding is Stableford caps scores at Net double bogey like stroke play. If so, handicap should be slower to rise because you are only using 8 versus 10 scores. If I am missing something, I am curious enough to  want to understand what that may be. My home course tees that I play are 72.1/154 now. My best score out here is 82. When my game started to decline, my handicap didn’t budge for 13 rounds because of good scores in my first 8! I know I am an anomaly but my handicap has increased almost 80% in the past few years (with only a few rounds this year). For a few months I knew I was losing every bet because my game was nowhere near my handicap. I suspect I have steamrolled a few nuances but that shouldn’t matter much. When I have modeled this with someone playing the same tees and course, one good round, or return to form, will immediately reduce the handicap by some amount.
