I get pretty decent contact when I tee off with my irons but on the fairway or in the rough my iron shots will always come up short. They go straight but short. I think I am contacting the bottom tip of the iron the ball. My question is do I want to contact the ball then take a slight divot? Or sweep the ball off the grass? I remember someone telling me your suppose to squeeze the ball with the ground.

Firstly, holy hell you take the club back far.

Anyway, yes and no. With your short irons, from your wedges to your 7 iron probably, your goal is to pinch the ball of the turf and then take a divot, that's how you get spin on the ball. After that, from 6 iron up to 3 wood, you want to sweep the ball off the turf. You also want to sweep the ball off the tee always, but personally, I don't tee the ball up until I'm up to a 6 iron.

I agree w/ Rubbery...I try to pick it off with the lower irons and sweep it iff the turf as I move up to the longer irons.

The only time i pick a ball is if i am in a fairway bunker,i use the same swing with all of my irons,7iron from middle of stance and 5 iron maybe an inch foward of centre,i take a smaller divot with the five than the seven.

With irons from the grass I always try and hit the ball first then the ground, so that means you contact the ball on a decending blow no matter what iron you have in your hand.

If you hit the ground then ball the ground or grass can alter your club path and clubface.

If you sweep an iron you will be inconsistant, sometime you will hit it thin and sometimes you will hit it fat - Hit ball then ground.

It's also harder to control the spin and your trajectory of the ball if you don't hit the ball first.

    • I'm not sure you're calculating the number of strokes you would need to give correctly. The way I figure it, a 6.9 index golfer playing from tees that are rated 70.8/126 would have a course handicap of 6. A 20-index golfer playing from tees that are rated 64/106 would have a course handicap of 11. Therefore, based on the example above, assuming this is the same golf course and these index & slope numbers are based on the different tees, you should only have to give 5 strokes (or one stroke on the five most difficult holes if match play) not 6. Regardless, I get your point...the average golfer has no understanding of how the system works and trying to explain it to people, who haven't bothered to read the documentation provided by either the USGA or the R&A, is hopeless. In any case, I think the WHS as it currently is, does the best job possible of leveling the playing field and I think most golfers (obviously, based on the back & forth on this thread, not all golfers) at least comprehend that.

    • Yes it's true in a large sample like a tournament a bunch of 20 handicaps shouldn't get 13 strokes more than you. One of them will have a day and win. But two on one, the 7 handicap is going to cover those 13 strokes the vast majority of the time. 20 handicaps are shit players. With super high variance and a very asymmetrical distribution of scores. Yes they shoot 85 every once in a while. But they shoot 110 way more often. A 7 handicap's equivalent is shooting 74 every once in a while but... 86 way more often?
