I started playing a year ago and bought a set of Taylormade RAC OS 2 irons. I got down to around a 12 handicap, so I bought a set of TM RAC TP Musclebacks. I played them from December to April and my handicap went up to around 22, so I boxed them up and put them away. I started playing my old OS 2's and have gotten it back down to a 12 now.

My problem is that with the offset of these clubs, I can NOT make them play a fade. I can draw the ball all day, but that is it. Also, I did notice that it is much harder to get spin on the ball with the OS 2 irons.

I do like the look of the musclebacks at address (thin top line, etc), but I was not very consistent with them. Some days, they were great, other days I wanted to dump them into the water hazard.

I am looking at the r7 TP irons, and the regular r7 irons. I do want a club that I can work the ball with, but I don't want a set with sweet spots the size of the head of a pin. I also would like to avoid giving up distance if at all possible. I hit my current PW 130 yds, and would really like to keep it that way.

Which of the two sets (r7 and r7 TP) would be better for me?

Thanks,
cvlngineer

Anyone have an opinion on the matter? I have already put the set of Taylormade Tour Preferred Musclebacks up for sale, so I need to make a decision quickly.

Thanks

Hey, I had the same exact thing as you man. I have the RAC OS2, and I couldn't get them to fade, and they didn't spin as much as musclebacks. So I went out about two weeks ago and got MP-57's and love them so far. I hit them pretty well. Obviously your penalized more for a mishit but it doesn't bother me. It's forcing me to swing smoother anyway.

The R7 TP's may be the club for you, or just the in general the R7's. They seem to have what you're looking for. Not as much offset, a little bit thinner topline, and a solid amount of forgiveness.

But I'd test them before buying them. Maybe a local driving range would have demo clubs?

Ah, i would kill for thsoe muscle backs.

As you can see, i play the r7 TP's.

They are my favorite irons i have ever played. They react very well on my bad swings, they give you feedback, not stinging, but enough to know you hit it off. The audible feedback is my favorite feature as of yet, alot of times i can tell you how i hit a ball before i even look up as i can hear it.

They are definetly workable, more so than the regular r7's which are also great clubs. The best way i can put it is that they are the best clubs ive played, the only thing i would change is i would prefer the sole of teh Ping S59's.. a small quivvle. (is that a word) I have played the 695 CB, 775, 755, mp 30, mp 60, and a few other, and these came out on top for me.

Let me know if you ahve any other questios.

I do like the looks of the r7 TPs, but I sure don't want to jump the gun like I did with the musclebacks. LOL

Yea, I am planning on trying them out at Golfsmith.

Do they have to be taylormade?

Look around your area for a Pro Shop that it set up near a driving range.

Usually they will let you test their clubs at the range instead of hitting against a net.

The best way to know what iron is right is to try them out.

Yes, sad but true, I prefer Taylormade. LOL

Well, I went and hit the r7 and the r7 TP's at Golfsmith and both hit very well, but the TP model was a little easier to shape shots with. They are both LONG! I have never hit a 6 iron that far in my life.

I decided to get the r7 TP's

I may be late in responding, but: I was going to recommend the R7 TP's also. I switched about a month ago and haven't regreted it once. I switched from the forged Nike Pro Combos. I was afraid I would miss the forged feel, but for a cast club the TP's actually feel 'almost' the same. I think you'll really be happy with the TP's.

I am really looking forward to playing a round with them. I was only able to hit the 6 iron, since that was the only demo that they had. On the launch monitor, I hit 20 or so shots and they averaged about 184-187 yds. I am anxious to see if the whole set is this way. Are the launch monitors accurate? This seems a bit extreme. With my old 6 iron, I am lucky to get 170 out of it.

You have been playing them for a month, did you notice a large jump in distance with them?

Not really an overall increase. Probably about the same in 'pure' shot distance. They are however more forgiving on off center hits, which in turn gives a little more distance than the same shot with the Pro Combos.

I haven't been playing as much as I would like in the past couple of months, so I feel they have helped me be a litle more consistant in shot outcome. In the end that's most important to me.

Go to a shop and

TRY THEM ALL
TRY THEM ALL

I cannot stress that enough. Try everything that looks like a club to try. I thought when I was looking to get another that I wanted more Pings, but I tried Titleist and Mizuno as well and I like the Mizuno's better than everything else from feel to look at address.

I decide on the r7 TPs. I found a brand new set of unhit demos that were already 3/4 inch longer than standard for $500. I took them and had some new Golf Pride Tour Velvet mid-sized grips put on them yesterday. I decided to leave the lie angle alone for now, instead of having them bent to 1 degree upright. I wasn't sure that 1 degree would make that much difference.

I will try them out tomorrow. Hopefully my handicap won't start skyrocketing like it did when I bought my blades!

I played my first round with the r7 TP's on a course that I have never played before. It was not a pretty sight. It was not the new irons' fault though. I couldn't even hit my trusty old wedges. Just one of those days, I guess. I did finally hit some decent shots with the new irons on 16 17 and 18. I will try them on my home course tomorrow. It will be an irons only day, to try and get used to them.

    • To flog this subject even further, if that's even possible, this article from Golf Monthly just appeared today in one of my news feeds. Written by a golf writer in the UK who I never heard of, he's basically saying that there should be only 3-5 rounds from the most recent 20 that should count towards the average and only competitive rounds should count. He claims the erratic scorers would have less of an advantage than they do now. He makes a lot of references to "club golfers" in the UK being the ones who are mostly dissatisfied. https://share.google/qmZZBEoJvOxHxJGil  In my experience with my league where we have golfers with indexes ranging from 5 to 40, looking at the weekly results from the past two years, I can detect no pattern that would substantiate the claim that the current system gives an unfair advantage to either erratic golfers (aren't we all?) or higher handicappers. Apparently though, at least in the UK, this seems to be "a thing."
