I bought my son (15, 5'11", 165) a used Taylor Made r7 460 11.5 degree driver from Golfsmith a few weeks back. He has dropped 3 strokes on his handicap (12 to 9) because he has hit 10-13 fairways a round the past 2 weeks along with winning 2 local summer junior tour events shooting 77 and 79 to win the 2 events. But, since switching he has lost about 25 yards on his drives, straighter, but shorter (260-280 compared to 270-300+, yes these yardages were checked using SkyCaddie). The driver has a 55 Reax, regular flex, soft tip shaft in it. For those out there using Taylor Mades, are they traditionally shorter? I do not know, both of us have always used custom built drivers by me through Golfsmith. The previous driver was a Snake Eyes 10.5 degree with a 61 gram regular flex shaft with a low/mid bend point. I know you can't have your cake and eat it too always, but I am just curious if anyone else noticed a distance loss with Taylor Made or could it just be the shaft, maybe try and find a mid tip shaft and give that a whirl.

Driver: TaylorMade r7 460 / 11.5 degrees

Putter: Tear Drop
Ball: Precept Laddie
Wedges: Golfsmith Snake Eyes 56 degrees / 60 degrees

No, I had the opposite situation. I picked up at least fifteen yards from switching to a Stiff Flex 9.0 R7 Draw. This could however be mainly contributed to the fact that my old driver was a senior flex, and my SS is about 104. So I guess to answer your question- I gained distance, I did not lose it.

that'" -Nietzsche

He's a 9 HDCP using an 11.5? I mean thats not weird or anything.. but shouldn't he be good enough for a lower lofted driver? Or does he prefer high loft?

It's all about your swing. I was using a 13.5 g5 for a while...you can gain a lot of distance with carry if your swing says thats what you should use.

His old driver (10.5 degrees) seemed to come off lower (possibly difference in shaft makeup), so we went with an 11.5 in the Taylor Made. Seems to hit it a bit higher as expected, but I hit a 13 degree high launch driver from Golfsmith and absolutely kill it. I am outdriving his Taylor Made by 25 yards or more. I am just thinking that he probably needs to go to a stronger shaft and back to a 10.5 degree loft. I am working on that today.

He has been, but it was last summer. He has completely changed as a golfer since then. We need to get back on one again. I think I am going to order another shaft model from Golfsmith and then return his other one for the 90/10 guarantee. I just talked to customer service about it.

    • To flog this subject even further, if that's even possible, this article from Golf Monthly just appeared today in one of my news feeds. Written by a golf writer in the UK who I never heard of, he's basically saying that there should be only 3-5 rounds from the most recent 20 that should count towards the average and only competitive rounds should count. He claims the erratic scorers would have less of an advantage than they do now. He makes a lot of references to "club golfers" in the UK being the ones who are mostly dissatisfied. https://share.google/qmZZBEoJvOxHxJGil  In my experience with my league where we have golfers with indexes ranging from 5 to 40, looking at the weekly results from the past two years, I can detect no pattern that would substantiate the claim that the current system gives an unfair advantage to either erratic golfers (aren't we all?) or higher handicappers. Apparently though, at least in the UK, this seems to be "a thing."
