I have hit a Nike driver for the last 3 years and I have loved it. It is the first driver that I was ever able to hit consistantly. The Nike driver is now getting old and it is time for a change. The Nike is a 9.5 with a EI-70 tour x stiff shaft. The Shaft was tipped an inch and the the butt was cut down to make the club 44 inches overall. I then added lead tape to bring the swing weight up to a D3. It is stiff as heck which I believe is the reason I hit it consistantly along with the fact it is shorter than most titanium drivers. I want to change to a Taylor Made R7 8.5 and then put in a fujikura pro vista 90 x stiff shaft and then do the same thing to it as the Nike shaft. I like the Fujikura shaft because it is 90 grams (the EI-70 was 86) and it helps keep the shortened club feeling balanced. Does anyone have any other shaft or head suggestions. I want to make the change this winter so I am ready for spring and summer. Thanks

Everyone's swing is different, and a stiffer shaft will indeed keep a ball straighter, but lose distance too, all other things being equal. You sound like you have your mind made up on club head, loft, and shaft... so my suggestion is simply this: get fitted on a launch monitor. Read the science van article on The Sand Trap for more on that...

if you like it stiff and heavy - check out the Fujikura 869. I had it for about a week and with my sh$%&tty; swing I couldn't get it up in the air more than 10 ft, every hit felt like hitting the golf ball with a 2x4, but "good" players claim this shaft is "the one".
