You can also hit a provisional and declare the first ball lost, with or without actually searching for it (unless the rule book I have is outdated.)

If your rule book says that it is at least forty years out of date!

Lets just say for example I hit my tee shot into the woods. To conform to USGA rules, do i take a 1 stroke penalty and play the ball from where it went into the woods or do i take a 1 stroke penalty and rehit the tee shot?

      Day 55: 4/18/2024 Got to the range again today. Planned to do my priority pieces and then hit targets with irons. But after my priority pieces I hit a few drives and tugged them all hard left. .... Uh... oh boy.  So, I spent about a half hour trying to hit targets at the range with my driver.
