Hi all , just after a bit of advice im looking for a new shaft (driver) and understand what the different kickpoints do but what role does torque play? Im looking for a bit more consistency off the tee im not overly worried if i loose 10 or 20 meters in distance. I have heard that a heavier shaft will be more accurate, is this true?

I am using a heavier shaft than I was and I do like it better. I am not sure what role it plays in the torque. They also told me that I would hit the heavier shaft lower than the lighter one, but that is not the case. I actually hit it high as well. I have not checked the kick point, but that it just what I have noticed. But to justify the high ball flight, I hit everything really high.

Torque on the shaft has to do with the actual twisting of the shaft during the swing. The lower the torque, the less it bends/twists during load and release.
a lower torque shaft plays stiffer than a higher torque one.

So let's say you have a stock fuji stiff shaft for a cleveland driver. the torque is probably 3.5 - 3.8 on that sucker.
if you take a fuji aftermarket stiff shaft with the torque of 3.0 - 3.2 that shaft will bend and twist less than the stock shaft.

i'd go with a heavier shaft like a 73 gram and a torque of 3 - 3.2. I went with the D63 whiteboard and even though I love it...it could be a little bit heavier... it's just too damn light.

Torque is the amount the shaft will twist. Generally the heavier shafts resist twisting better simply because there is usually more material to help lower the torque and re-enforce it against twisting. Now when you get to higher end shafts they use stronger and lighter materials and possibly some manufacturing techniques to keep the weight of the shaft low at the same time the torque is also low.

Most 65g OEM shafts are somewhere around 3.0-3.5 and as high as 4.0 for a stiff, the higher end shafts for the similar weight are down around 2.5.

I went from a Proforce V2 75gams was under 3.0 of torque to a 75 gram Harrison Striper shaft with 3.9 torque and gained 15 yards on my drives

I can hit a low torque shaft well but my swing has to be spot on 100% of the time in terms of a consistent swing speed, tempo, and load

    • Day 116 12-6 Still working on getting to lead side. Tonight I also tried some skill work with clubface awareness.  Hit foam balls. 
    • To flog this subject even further, if that's even possible, this article from Golf Monthly just appeared today in one of my news feeds. Written by a golf writer in the UK who I never heard of, he's basically saying that there should be only 3-5 rounds from the most recent 20 that should count towards the average and only competitive rounds should count. He claims the erratic scorers would have less of an advantage than they do now. He makes a lot of references to "club golfers" in the UK being the ones who are mostly dissatisfied. https://share.google/qmZZBEoJvOxHxJGil  In my experience with my league where we have golfers with indexes ranging from 5 to 40, looking at the weekly results from the past two years, I can detect no pattern that would substantiate the claim that the current system gives an unfair advantage to either erratic golfers (aren't we all?) or higher handicappers. Apparently though, at least in the UK, this seems to be "a thing."
