I'm embarrassed to even post this! Played 18 yesterday at my bro-in-laws country club and made a complete mess of the short game.

On top of just having a bad short game day in general, I achieved 3 of the most hideous short game gaffs in the game of golf, all on the same day and on 3 consecutive holes!!

Hole #5: Short par 4, about 310 yards. Need to position your tee shot, but still not a very difficult hole even if you don't. One of the few easy par 4's on the course. 2nd shot lands just over the green, short-arm my chip and just barely make the green. Long putt for par, I HIT THE PUTT FAT. That's right, I hit a putt fat and it went about 2 feet. Took a 6 on the hole.

Hole #6: Par 5, hit two nice shots to be just off the green in 2. Very easy chip shot, ball sitting up nicely for me. About 20 feet to the hole. I DOUBLE-HIT THE CHIP!!! Yup, T.C. Chen'd it. Took a 6 on the hole as well.

Hole #7: #1 handicap hole. About 440 yards. Tough hole. Laying 2 just off the green and pretty happy about it actually. Short arm my chip again and just barely make the green. Steam coming out of my ears. Back off and gather myself before hitting my putt. Impossible putt, up and over a ridge and then downhill. I GO TO ADDRESS THE PUTT AND HIT THE BALL BY ACCIDENT...BALL ROLLS ABOUT 3 INCHES FORWARD. Took another 6.

Shot 47 on the front and 43 on the back.

Can anyone say lack of focus on short game!!! Playing this course again on Sunday, it's a toughy (for me anyway) 72.3 / 132 from the normal tees, we don't even consider playing the tips. They give you room off the tee but the greens can't be hard to hit and hold...need to have your short game in check.

Need to get myself together mentally for the short game. Usually it's the long game where my mental game lacks, with short game being a little stronger - but not lately.

Chipping is just killing me. Help! I think I'm trying to baby these chips shots. Not committing and executing.

Perk up, little camper, most people would kill to have only one problem!

This is yours.

Nothing in the swing is done at the expense of balance.

Yeah, I know how you feel. I had one of those days last weekend where I hit fat with the putter. I attribute it where I wasn't taking my time and failed to ground my putter to the green before the shot. I have poor depth of perception because I'm legally blind in my right eye. It was a very bright with the sun directly overhead, it seemed. Therefor, no shadow to help me out with the depth of field thing.

The thing is to remember to focus, don't rush things as long as you're not too slow, and try to enjoy the round

Of course the game of golf screws me in some way. My putting touch is coming back and now my chipping/pitching has gone down the drain. Yuck!

Revenge!

Played the same course yesterday and shot 81. No short game gaffs, actually short game was very good, got a up and down a couple times to save par or bogey (when it could have been much worse than bogey). Also made those 4-5 footers for par that I was constantly missing previously. Even knocked in a long birdie putt.

    • I'm not sure you're calculating the number of strokes you would need to give correctly. The way I figure it, a 6.9 index golfer playing from tees that are rated 70.8/126 would have a course handicap of 6. A 20-index golfer playing from tees that are rated 64/106 would have a course handicap of 11. Therefore, based on the example above, assuming this is the same golf course and these index & slope numbers are based on the different tees, you should only have to give 5 strokes (or one stroke on the five most difficult holes if match play) not 6. Regardless, I get your point...the average golfer has no understanding of how the system works and trying to explain it to people, who haven't bothered to read the documentation provided by either the USGA or the R&A, is hopeless. In any case, I think the WHS as it currently is, does the best job possible of leveling the playing field and I think most golfers (obviously, based on the back & forth on this thread, not all golfers) at least comprehend that.
    • Day 115 12-5 Skills work tonight. Mostly just trying to be more aware of the shaft and where it's at. Hit foam golf balls.
    • Day 25 (5 Dec 25) - total rain day, worked on tempo and distance control.
    • Yes it's true in a large sample like a tournament a bunch of 20 handicaps shouldn't get 13 strokes more than you. One of them will have a day and win. But two on one, the 7 handicap is going to cover those 13 strokes the vast majority of the time. 20 handicaps are shit players. With super high variance and a very asymmetrical distribution of scores. Yes they shoot 85 every once in a while. But they shoot 110 way more often. A 7 handicap's equivalent is shooting 74 every once in a while but... 86 way more often?
