So in my sig I have two Nike SV Tour Black Satin Wedges. They are a coming soon item.

I have a question.

Is it worth the extra $10 to get a spin milled vokey oil can over a Nike SV Tour Black Satin?

How much would I have to care for a Oil Can? I don't care if it rusts, but I don't want everything in my bag getting rusty, etc.

Thanks.

What is the difference in spin?

i love the satin black nike's but imo, the vokeys are a better product. it depends on what looks and feels best to you. i personally like looking down and seeing a darker color on my irons (thus, i have CG1 black pearl irons and dark colored wedges) but that's just me. it's up to you!

Flop SHot...I like both. If you come down to Tampa, Ill take you out on my course and you can demo both.

I don't have the oil cans so I can't speak to the rust. But these wedges are amazing for distance control. The only thing I've found close to them for this feature is TM RACs, and the Vokeys look much better in the bag. I wish they made a 64. The Vokey's aren't as soft as forged, but I think they give more feedback. But one man's crisp is another man's harsh. Same goes for the soft/mushy adjectives.

Id pay the extra $10 for the Vokey. Those things are unreal and in a few years if you wanted to sell it, you could always list it on Ebay and it would sell just because its a Vokey.
I dont think there is really anything you need to do as far as caring for it because its an oilcan finish. I would be concerned about possibly getting rust on your other clubs that it touches, but you could always get a headcover for it to prevent that.
Thats one of reasons why I personally prefer a chrome finish over the oilcan finish.

i have a oilcan 58* and i love it, lots of spin, has a very good feel to it and the only time it has rusted on me and its been very minimal was when you play on a day where the course was still a little damp and there would be a little bit of rust but a simple cleaning it was gone...... it wont go on your bag or on the other clubs...... im not just saying go vokey cause i have one, im saying vokey cause its a better product in MY EYES....... but hey man to each his own and no body can decide but you man, what ever you feel comfortable with and what ever catches your eye

From what Ive been told, hitting out of the bunker will knock the rust off too.

Well you already have the Nike SV 54, you should keep a consistent set up and go with the higher lofted SV wedge, just my opinion.

Edit - sorry miss read the question, I would stick with the Nike's, at the end of the day they are still very good clubs and are also a little cheaper than the vokeys, you also seem to have a Nike theme to your bag and the Nike SV's would compliment this theme nicely.

I have an oil can, but I also have one of those NOmad Tour Van wedges (seller on ebay), where he custom grinds and does them in the black. All I can say is Ilove the looks of that club. For some reason I want to hit it. I almost bought the Nike for the black alone, but they don't offer the bounce I want.
Mizuno has that chromed black thing, but it is not black.

I don't understand all these people with rusty oil can (or raw, or whatever) wedges.

I wipe my wedges off after I make shots. They don't rust. I don't want rust on them - rust is bad for spin (takes off spin) and erodes the clubface, which further lessens spin.

You've likely never seen a PGA Tour golfer with rusty wedges. Rust = less spin. Keep your clubs dry and you won't get rust.

In a review on this site a few years back, its says that they oil can was made TO RUST

http://thesandtrap.com/bag_drop/is_rust_a_must " Titleist's 200 series of Bob Vokey wedges are available in three finishes, including an "Oil Can" finish designed to rust and a "black nickel" finish designed to reduce glare without rusting.

I'd go with the Vokey. The rust look isn't my cup of tea though.

I have the OC Volkey 60* and its get a few spots on it here and there but I have all my irons in covers. One shot in the bunker and its rust free...

Moreover I would be concerned on how you play and whether the club will fit your game. My driver looks like a wooden chili spoon but it still works and feels better than anything else I have tried.

Try them both and get the one that works for you.

Its not a cute 18 year old girlfriend; it gets uglier much faster.

That column (not a review) states pretty clearly that rust is fairly pointless and that it reduces spin.

I don't recall saying that an oil can wedge was NOT designed to rust. I just said that: a) I don't understand why people rust wedges b) My wedges don't rust because I keep them dry c) PGA Tour pros don't have rusty wedges Unless you REALLY like the look of a rusted wedge, the only thing rust will get you is a less effective club that could spread rust to other clubs, towels, etc. Rust stains can be difficult to remove and kind of ugly on your pants (or elsewhere).

I have the Vokey and I can say that it is the best feeling wedge that I have owned. I have hit SV's that my friends have because I am a equipment geek. Don't spend money on a product that you haven't committed to, but I think if you saw the Vokey through, you would find it to be a great club for just $10 more.

Id say to go with the SM Vokey. I got them this year and i have been hitting the best wedges of my life. I didnt get the Oil Can however because i like the Tour Chrome look better so i can't speak to what the oil can is like.

I think what he is saying is that, you said you dont understand why people have rusty wedges. And he was just pointing out that they most likley have them because that is how the club was designed.

Anyways to comment on the topic. I had an oil can vokey, and currently bag two sv black satins. You cant go wrong with either one in my opinion. I like them both. I got my SVs for a combined $140 so it was a better deal for a club that perfroms just as well imo. At least in my experiences.

    • Day 23: weird day, and only had a little bit of time. Just did mirror work again, working on where the elbow is in the downswing
    • I flipped over to this tonight and thoroughly enjoyed it. Anyone else watch? I picked it up during the golf relay event, but seeing these pros out having fun in alternative events was refreshing and entertaining. I’m sure it will be on in reruns in the next week or so, so I won’t spoil the outcome. Im curious what others thought of it. I’m recording it’s later airing to see the beginning.
    • Day 443 - 2025-12-17 Made a few swings in testing some things out at another academy. Might pop up on someone else's podcast in a few weeks.
    • Day 37 (17 Dec 25) - nine hole round with my good friend.  We got paired up with a couple of the men’s group regulars as part of their shootout.  Started off with a wonderful quad bogie and then a dbl on three to be six over thru three holes.  Game went 180° over the next five as I shot one under (including a chip in birdie on hole six and four up and down 1 putt pars) for a net finish of five over. What could have been a really tough nine became a solid finish due to staying in the moment and not checking out.  Great day in course management and keeping perspective .
    • Day 127 12-17 Backswing and flow practice. Took advantage of the 60 degeee weather(it was 20 degrees Sunday)
