When are you not considered high handicap

Just wondering everyone's opinion on when you are not considered a high handicap anymore? Under 20? Under 15? Under 10?

i would think 10 - 15 is considered mid??
single digits is considered low?

I don't really know the cut off. That's just my thoughts on it.

i'm more or less with lemay427. I'd think of it as shooting in the 70's is low...80's is mid...and 90+ is a high handicapper.

I would say about 22.3 is considered to be high,the rest of us are scratch potential

I dont think you can classify a 6 handicap the same as a 15 according to those up there.

Someone at a 6 is still shooting in the 70s quite a bit, if not most of the time. That would not be the same as someone shooting 90. IMHO at least.

I dont know about that. A 6 could be shooting around 78-80 quite a bit on an average course.

congrats though on lowering your handicap by 2. Almost a low handicapper. that is impressive. keep up the good work!

I read that according to USGA statistics the average male handicap is 16.1 and the average female handicap is 29.2. But I would imagine that just takes into account registered handicaps. How could they count people who don't have a handicap? And that includes a lot of people I would imagine.

High: 20+
Mid-High: 15-20
Mid: 10-15
Mid-Low: 5-10
Low: 5 and below

I think that handicap is very flawed in the some courses play to some people's favor more than others. I know 20's that play our muni at mid 80's, but they can't break 100 when we play a great course. Maybe they are inconsistent, but I don't consider them high-handicappers.

Lemay, I've scored a bunch of rounds in the high 70's this year and that's dropped me from the 12.9 to the 9.4 right now. in the past 20 rounds, i've scored 4 rounds in the 70's. compared to the rest that are 80's with blow ups now and again in the 90's on courses i've never seen.

i'm just trying to get down to a 5 and under by next year!

I guess I keep it simple.

70's = Low
80's = Mid
90's = High

Id say that 20+ would be a high handicap.

Here's my take on it,

1. Low handicap golfer - Someone who rarely (1 round in 10) has higher than 78
2. Mid Handicap Golfer - Someone who usually scores in the area of 80 to 90
3. High Handicap Golfer - Someone who struggles to break 90 (1 round in 10)

I don't worry too much about the difficulty of the course - you still have to hit fairways and greens and get up and down when you don't whether it's 6400 or 7000 yards in length.
