What clubs would hybrids typically replace in a bag, or when should a hybrid be used? I hear recommendations for 18* and 21* rescue hybrids.

I have a very conventional arsenal: driver, 3W, 5W, 4-PW irons, putter

I noticed the lofts for the hybrids differ from brand to brand and it gets more confusing when some of the hybrids are designed more like irons while others look more like woods.

The lofts for one brand's 2H and 3H are another brand's 3H and 4H (respectively). Should I go by loft or the designation?

Go by loft. They typically replace long irons, although I think some people replace a 5 wood with like a 15 degree or something- I'm not really sure, but I know its been done. If you can hit a 4 iron, then you would only really probably look at a 3 hybrid (probably around 19-21 degrees), if you can't hit your four, then get a four as well. As for brands, there are a bunch. Personally, I didn't like the taylormade's at all. I hit the burner, the r7 draw and the rescue and I just couldn't stand them. I've found luck with nike hybrids. I have a SUMO squared and a CPR, and they're both great. I've heard great things about Adam's and nickent too, but I can't vouch for them as I've never hit either.

18* Should replace a 2iron or a 5 wood. Guess you didn't get july's golf digest, talks all about how to use hybrids. Typically you will also find a hybrid goes longer than the same lofted iron.

I've never really used my 4 iron on a course, but I am able to hit balls at the range using it. Is there a breakdown of what hybrid lofts would replace which irons? I did miss the July Golf Digest. I will start my subscription asap.

Don't buy the subscription. Go to target and get like 15 dollars or 20 dollars worth of Golf digest gear (a putting mat, chipping net, driving net among others) and you get a free year long subscription. As for replacement lofts, every set of clubs have different lofts. 19-21 for a 3 iron, 22-24 for a 4 iron and then probably 25-27 for a 5 iron is my best guess. Definitely look into at least one as it provides for a great club off of the tee if you have trouble with your driver.

    • To flog this subject even further, if that's even possible, this article from Golf Monthly just appeared today in one of my news feeds. Written by a golf writer in the UK who I never heard of, he's basically saying that there should be only 3-5 rounds from the most recent 20 that should count towards the average and only competitive rounds should count. He claims the erratic scorers would have less of an advantage than they do now. He makes a lot of references to "club golfers" in the UK being the ones who are mostly dissatisfied. https://share.google/qmZZBEoJvOxHxJGil  In my experience with my league where we have golfers with indexes ranging from 5 to 40, looking at the weekly results from the past two years, I can detect no pattern that would substantiate the claim that the current system gives an unfair advantage to either erratic golfers (aren't we all?) or higher handicappers. Apparently though, at least in the UK, this seems to be "a thing."
