I've thinking about getting a set of Hogan's to play around with. I hit a friend's FTX 6 iron recently and fell in love. Hitting it on the sweet spot felt better (to me at least) than the MP-57s I tested recently.

My question is... in looking the FTX vs. the Plus irons, I can't really tell the difference between the two. I can find a number of used sets on-line for great prices, but wonder how the differ so I can decide which is best for me.

Any help would be appreciated.
What's in the bag:

G10 9 degree, TFC 129 shaft, stiff
Big Bertha 3 Wood
FTX 2i, Apex Plus 3i-E MP-R 52/07 and 56/13 Zing

From what I understand, the FTX is a combo set(3-6 cavity back and 7-PW muscleback) while the apex plus is all cavity backs. I just sold a 2001 set of Apex plus to a family member, and they were great clubs. I like the idea of a combo set to add control to my approach shots. Again I could be wrong but i believe they are the same clubs except for the difference noted.-AB

I have both the FTX and the Edge Pro (which is a lot like the plus) and indeed, the major difference is that in the FTX, the E(PW) - 8 are pure musclebacks with progressive cavities from 7 to the 3 iron. Even in the longer irons, the FTX have thinner toplines, narrower soles and what seems to be a bit less offset, though there's minimal offset in both. I switched to the FTX last year and love them... I just bought another brand-new set.

The Plus is going to be a little more forgiving, though I find that even the FTX lets me get away with some pretty bad swings with just a bit of distance loss most of the time. Both should give you plenty of feedback on mis-hits and I've never hit *anything* that feels as good as the Hogans on pure shots. The FTX are definitely a bit sweeter and easier to control trajectory on. Both are beautiful to look at in the bag and at address. If you can, spend a bit of time with your friends 8 iron and 5 iron... they'll probably play the most different from the Plus. Good luck with the decision, let us know how it turns out.

Scotty Cameron - Mil-Spec Newport 2 (33" standard)

    • To flog this subject even further, if that's even possible, this article from Golf Monthly just appeared today in one of my news feeds. Written by a golf writer in the UK who I never heard of, he's basically saying that there should be only 3-5 rounds from the most recent 20 that should count towards the average and only competitive rounds should count. He claims the erratic scorers would have less of an advantage than they do now. He makes a lot of references to "club golfers" in the UK being the ones who are mostly dissatisfied. https://share.google/qmZZBEoJvOxHxJGil  In my experience with my league where we have golfers with indexes ranging from 5 to 40, looking at the weekly results from the past two years, I can detect no pattern that would substantiate the claim that the current system gives an unfair advantage to either erratic golfers (aren't we all?) or higher handicappers. Apparently though, at least in the UK, this seems to be "a thing."
