Steepen your swing. Less spin, flatten it out.

Right now, while I am learning to chip with some consistancy, my shots land and release. I just want to get some check up. I don't need it to come running back at me, but slow up enough to roll towards the hole some would be great.

Help me.

LOL! I'm not laughing at you, but at me! I have a very shallow angle of attack on nearly everything i hit. I probably hit the ball with less backspin than any 4 handicap in the world! LOL, again!

I'd love to help you out, but geez, if i knew i wouldn't have had to read the other people's advice here! I even read the Pelz article, and i like Dave a lot, but i do all those things, and i hit the ball crisply. I just can't spin the stupid thing. Perhaps i should quit being so cheap and buy better golf balls! GAC

I'm extremely "unfussy" about balls. I'll play anything white and round!  I''ll even play the colors i find.

I was a little non-specific before. It obviously takes more than just swinging hard down on the ball to produce copious amounts of backspin.

Good grooves on your irons will help A TON. A repeating, steep swing hitting ball first(providing its a good ball with a spinny cover) should make some decent check on the ball.

  • 4 years later...

I have tried a lot of stuff to put backspin on shots (or at least get the ball to stop where i want it to).  Any suggestions (i use proper balls too so thats not the problem)

Club head speed is a huge part of it. Also greens condition when greens are soft or wet its easy. I spun back a 6 iron last night but the greens were soft and wet.

Clubhead speed, angle of attack, clean grooves and contact, premium golf ball.

The end.
