As a variation from your sweet spot (i.e. ideal flex for your swing):

Stiffer = lower, straighter, shorter. Weaker = higher, "crookeder", longer In other words, if you should be playing an "S" then an "X" would probably be lower, straighter, and a bit shorter while an "R" would be higher, less straight, and a bit longer perhaps.

You should also be aware that as your swing mechanics improve your swing speed will increase and you don't want to be stuck with a regular shaft with a higher swing speed. Thats the problem I've got right now... I should be using stiff shafts in my woods but am stuck with regulars for the moment.

OK, humm, confusing a bit to me.

If I should be hitting a stiff driver (the pga pro says I should) but I really like my r7 with Reg graphite, what would a stiff graphite probably do for me? What would a still steel probably do? I can control the ball straight, draw, or slice with my current club.

You know the old saying right? If it aint broke don't fix it. Stronger shafts tend to give more control and less distance to a point. They can give more distance too if the shaft you are using is really mismatched for your swing. To me it sounds like your fine, go to your home course and see if they have the R7 with a stiff shaft and demo it. Then you can see the difference for yourself.

Good idea..i think i test out a R5 with a regular shaft before deciding what to use...

Agreed - don't even think about it. If it works for you, keep it.

Shaft flex is one of those "manly" things I hope you can avoid, being a gal and all... It's also true that a smoother swing puts you more towards an R flex a lot of the time than an S. It's all about how the shaft loads.

Great Idea. I'll wait till Spring when the driving ranges open back up and do exactly that at Crystal Mountain.

Erik, thanks for the suggestion. Watching the pro's on TV I do see very smooth swings. I think if I keep my swing speed reasonable the regular might be the right shaft after reading several replies. Thanks all.
