There are many holes at my home course that have sand bunkers that are about 30-60-yrds away from the green. When I'm lucky enoughto get in them, I have trouble reaching the green from these distances, usually play a 56w , any advice on how to play the shot or what clubs to use?

For shots up to 40'ish yards of carry I use a PW or 9i with the face opened up maybe a bit more than normal for a SW explosion shot. Then just hit a normal explosion taking a bit less sand than normal.

Longer than that and (for me) that technique is less effective.

PW atleast for sure. Depending on the conditions of the sand. If you are comfortable picking a GW out of the bunker you could try that, but I normally go to my PW or 9i in a 50-60 yd bunker shot in a loose bunker.

This is one of, if not the most difficult shot in golf. Even with hours of practice, I'd consider myself mediocre at this shot.

My technique for a 30-50 yard explosion:
With a good lie, you can use a standard sand wedge, the worse the lie gets, the more club you want to take.

Open the stance slightly, and hit about an inch behind the ball. Precision is everything here.

SWING HARD. I know it sounds a little ridiculous, but that's my technique. I don't go balls out, but I take a pretty good whack at the sucker.

Lastly, and probably most importantly, FOLLOW THROUGH. If you cut off your follow through, you're going to be lucky enough to have the same shot again.

Anything above 50 yards, and I'll hit a full 60 taking very, very little sand.

    • It’s winter here and time hitting at my indoor place.  This year I bought and sold a few sets so I didn’t settle in on anything. For this coming season, starting now I have a choice to make.  What set would you guys use? 1.  Nike Vapor Pro irons - They are like new, hit them some last year before I had to demo other sets.  I love them, original grips, barely used so I’m almost not wanting to use them to keep their value up.  Standard LLL and standard grips. 2. Taylormade P7TW irons - Still in the box.  Got them over a year ago but had too much to hit, never used them.  Have used a set in the past and loved them.  Ended up with my own set custom fit to me -1/4”, 1 degree flat midsize grips.  These are probably not as valuable because they are still available and they are fit to me. I hate to put the Nikes away but it makes more sense to save them than the TW’s…. I dunno….
