Sorry if this is a stupid question, but what is the difference between these clubs and ones that you find in retail stores?

Is it a way to jack up the price, or is there a legitimate benefit?

If it's not just amarketing gimmick, I'm guessing it's mainly the lofts. Tour player's lofts are typically a little weak I believe. And they still hit them a mile.

"tour specs" can mean a lot... Taylormade "TP" is a marketing gimmick, yes the clubs are set up with specs that better players find ideal but obviously Sergio isnt grabbing a tour burner TP off the rack

when you're on ebay and you find a true tour issued club you have no idea what you're getting because most of the time the specs on the club are the OTR markings but there are adjustments and alterations to the club

an example of this could be a tour pro that is using a 56 degree wedge bent to 53/54... the wedge will have 56 degree marking unless handstamped that it has been bent

The actual equipment is the same. However, the specifications vary. Some examples:

The driver face may be opened a few degrees or set to neutral as opposed to being closed. The weight of the driver head may be heavier than an actual retail model. The face can be designed to be deeper.

In irons, you may have tour model irons that are slightly smaller, have the leading edge shaved down, the toe may be square as opposed to round. Sometimes, the MB on a blade is designed to stretch a little longer. Also, as previously stated, the lofts can be made either weaker or stronger. Case in point, AK. His Nike model Irons are a club stronger than the standard specs. So , even when he chokes down, he's still swinging that iron and not losing, anything.

The one major difference is Prototype equipment: equipment unavailable to the general public. Example, Titleist 907D4 driver.

I would not recommend buying Tour Spec items unless the specs were what you needed. You can go to a good fitter and get the same things done to your equipment.

Taylor Made 24* Burner Accra Axiv 105 Tour Hybrid Shaft

Sure he is. The thing is, his rack has 50+ drivers that are all roughly the same loft, and he chooses the one that's precisely what he wants.

Tour model clubs are the same as the clubs you can buy off the racks with the exception that they're often a little more customized. Tour model drivers might have a more open face than standard, or a little flatter lie, and Tour model wedges have grinds you can't get, etc. They're not made differently, though, or with different "better" metals as I've heard other people say. And the "TP" isn't a true "gimmick," but a way of saying: a) club doesn't have draw bias b) club has a better shaft, generally c) club has more weights that come standard (if applicable) d) etc.

This is true.

Most of these people are right, but Taylormade isn't the only company that releases tour equipment. Nike has a limited release on their Nike SQ Tour 5900. Nike has the MOI of this driver being around 4800, with a smaller head than the stock SQ 5900. This driver also comes with 3 shaft options, which are all top of the line including the VS Proto, The Diamana Whiteboard, and the Grafalloy Epic. Nike plans on releasing more shaft options soon. Also, there is no alignment aid on this driver, just like Nike's previous tour versions, like the orginial Nike Sasquatch Ti Tour, which is in Tiger's Bag with a Whiteboard shaft. With Taylormade, which makes the most tour equipment, meaning it is the easiest to get to the public, i always buy the TP stuff. Anything from taylormade that isnt TP has a draw bias, this information can be found here: http://www.taylormadegolf.com/produc...ion=technology just click technology. Tour equipment is awesome for the average golfer, but i guarentee you are not getting what is in so and sos bag like the commercial says.

Thanks guys for your answers.

The reason I ask is that I am a member of another forum and know someone (who is a good guy) but he is selling a Yes putter that he got of the van that are to "Retief Goosen's specs"....for $300. I know that he isn't trying to rip anyone off, but $300 for a putter that is to someone elses specs seems a little steep IMO.

I just got a scotty cameron tour issue putter for 250, its to nobody's specs, its just 35 inches with a 345 gram head. Some tour spec clubs are extrodinary, but others are overrated. This cameron though, from what i can see, is one of the extrodinary ones.

    • Day 12: did the yardstick putting drill for a bit while watching tv.
    • Hole 6, 185 uphill par 3, wind out of the right. I hit a 7 iron to 5-FT left of the pin. The ball landed about 185.5 yards. I drained the putt for a birdie, and most likely a skin.  2nd place is more of a best swing made. 110 yard wedge shot, where I did what I wanted in the back swing and downswing.  I hit a 75% partial wedge 95%. It was flushed, flighted, and beautiful to watch fly over the green. 🤣. I will need to redial in the wedges sometime. Since I am making an effort to make my former 3/4 swing length my full swing length.
    • Is that like "the longest yardstick you can find"? I don't have Airtags but I'd call all of them Airtags too.!
    • Yea, that makes sense.  I remember an Open tournament when they brought out the wind meter one day because balls were being blown around the green. I think it was 45+ sustained, which probably means 60 mph gusts.  I think for the most part, it isn't something that needs to be taken into account.  Also, a golf ball is designed to optimally move through the air. It has better aerodynamics than a sphere.  Thanks for your expertise on this. That makes sense. I know about how wind diminishes the lower in height you go. I didn't know it went near zero at the ground. I deal more with tall structures (utility poles), and we have to take into account height and impacts of wind on the pole. A bit of experience, but wasn't sure how close to zero, non-impactful it was on the golf ball on the ground.
