The past few weeks, and almost all of summer, I've been losing more and more interest in golf...and I've found out a few reasons why..

1.) I don't really have anyone to play with. My main core of friends aren't golfers, they play baseball, basketball, soccer, or football...none of them really play golf besides one or two, and they are pretty bad, they can't really play seriously. I wish I had some people to play with. I am on a high school golf team, but the kids on the golf team never seem to be able to play...it's frustrating. I'm always stuck going out by myself, and it's just gotten boring with no one to talk to or see your good shots. I've noticed it's a lot more fun when I get to play with my dad on the weekends, but during the week, it just isn't anymore.

2.) Same old course...I've been playing on the same nine hole course that I am a member at for two years now. I played there all last summer, and all this year because our team practices and plays our home matches there. I'm getting sick of it too, which is making me lose interest. It's only nine holes too. It used to be really fun to go around twice....but now, it's just so 'stale' I guess you could say.

Does anyone feel this way or is it just me?

When I had a membership the first year, near the end of the year I lost interest in the course as well. I had a phase about a week or two ago where I almost packed it in for the year because I was doing so awful.

1) Get to know some of the juniors at the course, or even the adults you play at for now, and play with them. Some very polite adults are great to play with. Or get a girlfriend and teach her how to golf

2) Don't get a membership next year. This year was the only year I layed off a membership and it has been unreal. I've played so many different courses I can't even count. I play the same old with Lange, but I go with my dad to a ton of different courses out of town and such. Maybe ask him to take you to some when you play.

We don't play at the same course I do during the week when I play with my dad, we go other places...that's also why it's more fun.

There is 1. no other juniors at my home course 2. no decent golfers at my home course period. I've been there for two years now, and I've never stumbled across anyone who can break 85 on the course...and the course is extremely easy. It's labeled as a beginners course since it's just 5900 yards from the furthest tees...no good players play there. I played with an 83 year old today, and he was just ANNOYING. Everytime I missed a putt..."you do realize the object is to get it into the hole, right?"...it was so annoying hearing that after every putt.

i can't wait til i can drive next year...im gettin out of here and going to a real country club, lol.

Then your only option is to put up with the annoying, crappy golfers, or wait till next year. I'm sure the option to wait next year is alot easier.

Maybe even try and get a friend into golf.

I know I didn't get Lange better at golf persay, but he definatly got into it alot this year beacause we always go together and he was improving drastically. And its great because we golf atleast once a week and we have a good time.

The better they play the more they want to get out.

I got sick of my course for a little while, so I took 5 clubs one time. 3W, 4H, 7i, 54*, Putter. It made the course like it was new. I had to take new shots and it was completely different. Give it a shot.

If it makes you feel any better I've been so friggin' busy lately that I haven't even had time to sneak in 9 holes or a range session in weeks. The next month isn't looking any better.

I belong to two courses and still get bored from time to time. Variety is the spice of life - once every two weeks or so, go play somewhere else.

Or play your course from the red tees. Then play a scramble by yourself (two balls)the next time. Then play an anti-scramble (the worst of two shots).

Or don't play the course for a week but instead tell yourself that you're not going to do anything but work on your short game. Or work on working the ball (height, shape) on the range. By the end of the week you'll be itching to get back out.

I usually play by myself and while its more fun when I get to play with friends or family, Im thankfull for every time I get to tee it up.
As far as getting bored playing the same course all the time, why not just try a different course? I get bored playing the same course all the time, which is why I rotate which courses I play.
On the course I usually play on, they have an 18-hole "American" style course and then they have a 9-hole links course. So, I play 9 holes every Sunday morning and I rotate which 9 holes I play. Some weeks I play the front 9, some weeks I play the back 9, some weeks I play the links course. It keeps things from getting boring due to playing the same holes week after week.
Only you can decide if its time to give up golf and move on to something else.

Thanks for the ideas. I think I'm going to do this the rest of the week.

I can kind of relate, definitely bored with the golf routine I am in. The only time I get to play 18 is on weekends and around here it is "hurry up and wait" on weekends. So I prefer a foursome on those days, problem being the regular group I was playing with always wants to tee off at the crack of dawn and I don't want to do that all the time(courses are always an hour away, Top Rates for early weekend), so lately I have become their "first alternate", which I really don't care for either. I guess the problem with being unmarried is I can pick my prefered times. Also, this may sound shallow, but I am tired of playing with these hacks and I feel it is hurting my game(extremely slow play, always wanting to let EVERY group behind us play through wether we are waiting or not, trash talkin each other when shooting 115, and I can't watch them swing anymore). All of these guys are extremely nice, but I feel like I can't relate to them. I can play with my boss who is a great golfer, but who wants to play with the boss on your day off....so yeah, it's not just you who feels their golf experience is a little stale lately..

The past few weeks, and almost all of summer, I've been losing more and more interest in golf...and I've found out a few reasons why..

It's funny but this is the same exact reason why I love golf. I spent so many years playing baseball and having to hear my teammates whine and moan about why they were slumping, why they made an error, etc. It drove me nuts. Golf has given me a respite from all that. I actually enjoy going out by myself. That does not mean I don't enjoy playing with fellow TST members, I do. I know, though, that people are busy and have lives. Therefore, its just easier to get up and go, solo.

I feel for you, though, you're younger and should have a friend or two to enjoy this great game. My suggestion to you is to get in contact with your local "First Tee" program and see if they have guys in your age group. Give them your info and maybe you'll have some golfing partners.

I too have been having similar issues lately.

I only have one friend that likes to golf regularly. He's good and it's a blast hitting the course with him, but he works A LOT so we only get out every couple of weeks, sometimes every week, sometimes twice a week. It depends on our schedules.

I'm sort of hesistant about going to the course by myself. Not because I'd be playing the course alone, but I'm nervous they'd pair me up with another single. I'm sure if I went around noon or something during the work week it wouldn't be an issue, but I just don't want to end up playing with some stranger.

Sometimes playing with a "stranger" is good. Maybe he'll end up being your friend and you'll end up golfing with him twice a week, you never know.

That's the problem, last time as a single I got paired up with two guys that tried to fight the guys behind us because he made a joke about stealing the guys club, I had to use my managerial skills and break it up

Maybe you should be thankful you can play all day every day. I personally enjoy playing alone, just me and the course. When you are out there spice it up. Take a drop in the thickest rough, play the holes backwards (i.e. wedge, mid iron, FW). Just enjoy what you have, one day you may have a career that will only allow you to play once a month.

That's true and it's really not so much of the person being a stranger, it's basically nervousness that I'll get paired with someone who is really good and they'll get stuck playing with me.

at first i thought you were just in a rut....but then it began to sound like you didnt like to play with anyone....."they cant even break 85, or he was so annoying"....

How about relaxing and attempt to have a good time while you get to play. One day you will be married with three kids wishing you could get out for 9. Or worse yet, you might turn into that same old timer who was so annoying.

Be cool, relax, enjoy the game.

    • It may not have been block practice, though, is one of the main points here. You may have been serving and from the same place, but you were likely trying to do slightly different things. It seems that would only be blocked practice if you were trying to hit the same exact ball hit to you to the same exact place in the far court. I'm not sure that's as random as if the ball that you're given to hit is at different places, too, but again…
    • I played tennis in college. I thought block practice was great for serves because you were starting the point and  you could easily adjust where you wanted to place the ball based off the same motion. I equate those to tee balls. I despised block practice for groundstrokes once you reached a certain level and your fundamentals were good. To me, hitting a 100 crosscourt backhands in a row was silly because I would never do that in a match. I needed to randomize it by hitting some deep, some angled, all with different speeds and spins. I share that same thought about iron play. Because we seldom hit the same approach shots hole after hole, I prefer to practice irons randomly.
