I've been working on getting my backswing steeper, as it has a tendency to get too flat. However, I can't get a consistent thought or key in my head that works. It seems like any solution to make the plane steeper eventually makes it too steep, and then I'm fighting the other way. The pendulum just swings back and forth between too steep and too flat, and I can't get consistent.

I think that at hip high, my clubface should be parallel to my spine angle and the club should be pointing down the target line through my hands. However, from there to the tip I am inconsistent and can't get a solid thought that helps me without eventually overdoing it.

What do you guys think about or focus on during the backswing?

Why do you feel that you your backswing is too flat? What are you expecting to achieve from a relatively steeper backswing?

Also do you have a video? If you posted one through swing academy so that we can see the slow motion...it would be really helpful.

I can do that tomorrow.

Until then, I am below plane on video in my backswing, which forces me to come over the top a bit on my downswing to get on plane - but it's very handsy and not consistent. I am more just looking for general backswing keys and thoughts than a specific analysis of my swing.

Your setup has a big influence on how well you are able to swing on a sound plane. If you look at pro golfers you'll see that most tend to have their back (spine) and the club shaft forming a right angle at address, and the edge of the shoulders stacked over the knee caps and the balls of the feet. If your setup has those same characteristics then you'll have a good chance of swinging on a good plane, but if your posture and/or balance are off you'll have physics and biomechanics working against you.

Pro setup example:

In my bag:

Driver: Burner TP 8.5*
Fairway metals/woods: Burner TP 13* Tour Spoon, and Burner TP 17.5*
Irons: RAC MB TP Wedges: RAC TPPutter: Spider Ball: (varies ) (Most of the time): TP Red or HX Tour/56---------------------------------------------------

    • It’s winter here and time hitting at my indoor place.  This year I bought and sold a few sets so I didn’t settle in on anything. For this coming season, starting now I have a choice to make.  What set would you guys use? 1.  Nike Vapor Pro irons - They are like new, hit them some last year before I had to demo other sets.  I love them, original grips, barely used so I’m almost not wanting to use them to keep their value up.  Standard LLL and standard grips. 2. Taylormade P7TW irons - Still in the box.  Got them over a year ago but had too much to hit, never used them.  Have used a set in the past and loved them.  Ended up with my own set custom fit to me -1/4”, 1 degree flat midsize grips.  These are probably not as valuable because they are still available and they are fit to me. I hate to put the Nikes away but it makes more sense to save them than the TW’s…. I dunno….
    • Day 215 (3 Dec 24) - Another very chilly day - opted to work on easy pitches in the backyard. Worked thru the irons and wedges - focused on foot position and tempo.
