Well lets start by saying I'm horrible with the driver. Just cant hit it for the life of me. Usually just a 100 yards shank off the tee.

So I started experimenting with Woods & Hybrids lately. I hitting both over 200 yards off the tee, which is much more playable the a duffed driver shot of a 100 yads.

At this point in time it just seems more logical to tee off with a wood or hybrid until I improve with the driver. With that said I hear that alot of guys dont eve carry woods anymore & have replaced them with hybrids.

So my question is, would it be best to make the investment of a wood or two or just go w/ a hybrid or use both ?

Currently my irons are 3-GW, mind you im decent with short & mid irons but have a harder time with the longer irons.

Thanks.....

I would ditch the 3 and 4 iron and pick up a 3 wood off the tee, 19* hybrid which can also be hit off the tee and a 23* hybrid.

I would even go further and say a 5w or 7w might be the best long club. I am seriously considering taking my driver and 3w out of the bag and tee off with my 7w instead. Like the OP said, 200 yards in the fairway is better than (in my case) 250 in the trees or OB.

Im personally not a fan of hybrids anymore. I just dont hit them all that well. I hit a long iron way better than I do a hybrid.
With a hybrid, I found that I hit a hook a lot of the time. Ive talked to some golf pros about it and they all told be that when you have a clubhead that is like an iron and then make it bigger, that makes it a lot easier to turn the clubhead over during your swing and hit a hook.
For me, my ideal set would be a driver, 3-wood, 3-9 irons, PW, 52*, 56* and 60* wedges and a putter.
Hybrids work for some people and thats cool. Personally, they dont work for me.
If you dont hit your driver very well, but can hit your 3-wood pretty decent, Id hit that off of the tee every time. A lot of the time, if its a narrow fairway I will hit 3-wood because for me its a lot easier for me to control my 3-wood than it is to control my driver.
As to whether you should go with fairway woods or hybrids, thats really a question that only you can answer. Which clubs do you hit better? Whichever one you hit better and feel more confident with, thats what you should go with.

A 5w would be perfect. Off the tee or the grass. My favorite club by far.

    • I hope you don't mind me raising this one from the dead. I got shortgamechef's video access thing for a few months in 2024. I watched his yip fix videos (the general gist is similar to the first video above, but with a lot more detail) and it made a lot of sense. I was working on it in my backyard off a mat for a while and my yippy thing was mostly gone. Aside from anything else, the flop shot using that technique is so easy and controllable. But I got onto a golf course for the first time of the year and found myself by the green on a downslope with the ball sitting down a little in the rough and I was, not to put too fine a point on it, f***ed. Shallow is all well and good from a good flat lie and I understand it, but you can't make that your be all and end all. I still don't know if it's a good idea to use steep all the time or just when you need to. I have a hard enough time with one technique, let alone too.  Just got a pitching skillest lesson with Erik and unless I misunderstood things some, he wants me a bit steeper. @iacas - where do you fall on the steep vs shallow argument and how do you vary it according to need?
