I recently bought a set of original RAC LT's (2002/2003) with the stock TM LT stiff graphite (low torque/tip stiff) +1''. I have been playing since 2000 TA3's with stiff DG +1/2" but was curious to try a slightly more forgiving iron with graphite shafts (I have a couple of graphite hybrids that made me start thinking). Noticed the LT's feel "softer" and have a much higher ball flight than the TA3's. I suspect part of this is due to a lower CG in the LT's compared to the TA3's but was wondering if stiffening the graphite shaft in the LT's may help to lower the trajectory a little. Will shortening the shafts back to standard graphite length help to stiffen them? Should I look at tipping the shafts? Is there an easy way to stiffen the LT shafts?

sounds like it's more kickpoint and the CG placement of the irons than the tip. I think they can tip the shaft to make it stiffer, but then you're losing an inch or so from the overall length of the shaft (not 100% sure)

Yes, tipping the shafts will stiffen them up. Usually, if it's a stiff shaft a 1/2" will tighten it up just enough to be noticeable. If your clubs came from the factory already +1/2", just extend the clubs 1/2" with extensions. Typically, factory graphite shafts are a slight bit weaker than they say they are (at least in my experience with club building). I hope this helps!

The graphite shafts in the LT's are 1' longer than standard graphite length so I have a bit to play with length wise. I am having them shortened back to my steel length (+1/2") which is standard graphite length so I thought why not get some length taken off the tip end which will stiffen it up a bit. Will it change the kick point as well??

    • The first issue Erik spoke about is something we worked on for my swing during both GEARS sessions. GEARS was showing my pelvis center moving towards the ball during the back swing. I wasn’t the 4” guy though! This forced me to correct on the downswing to give myself space. My hip rotation was to high as well. We corrected it by first getting the weight off my heels in my stance and getting my posture correct. Then the feel was shifting back into my right hip at a 45 degree angle. This kept my pelvis center from moving towards the ball at the start of the backswing. I also didn’t sway back as much as I felt I did because of the angle I was shifting. Feel Ain’t Real. The cool thing about GEARS is as you work on something you can see the exact (Real) change happening. On video, it is much harder to spot this issue because of the 2D nature of filming. But I know what to look for now. Sadly, I was hurt all last year and most of this year so I really haven’t been able to work on it much. I did do a lot of backswing work though.
