I have only been playing for around a year or so but it's going well so far, My bag is mixed to say the least with very budget priced golf clubs which do me well for a high handicap (which i'm working on) and if I get into the teens by the end of the year, I might have a look at a nicer more modern set of clubs.

I thought about buying last year as a few parts of my game were not working but I opted to work hard at my swing which I am so glad I did, instead of taking an easy way out and realising that it was my mechanics not the clubs

What my big question is do newer clubs make any difference to your game? My driver is a Dunlop which cost me 20 Euros and although when I'm driving well, I can drive around 270 and my irons are a friends old Pinseekers from around 7 years ago or so.

I'm not going to rush into anything and will finish this year working with these clubs as they are working well at the moment

My main question is before I began rambling, did buying a certain type of clubs improve your game in anyway?

thanks in advance folks

Being a higher handicapper, game improvement clubs are something that's nice to have, as well as hybrids and other clubs that give good forgiveness. This year is where i have been basically doing my spending to new clubs, to fill gaps in my bag like my new wedge and also i bought a driver and last year i got a new putter. They all have favoured my game and put it in the right direction, but im still using my irons that i've had from day 1. It's a matter of confidence with your clubs to a certain degree, but 7 year old irons my be getting a little over used i'd say. Look for a nice cheap set i'd say in the future, just make sure you feel comfortable with what you have or are getting, don't make rational decisions and blow money on it. Golf equipment can get expensive and fast!

I'd say newer clubs make a difference. Up until about a month ago I was hitting a set of Jazz (locally owned and made, likely you've never heard of them) from about seven or eight years ago. I just picked up a new set of irons and a driver and I went from shooting low 90s to low 80s. I attribute much of my better play to the improved technology. However I think equally as valuable has been the improvement in my mental game. Now I feel like I can make every shot when I step up to the ball and 9 times out of 10 that translates into a good swing.

I just bought some Ping G10 irons. Played Mizuno Pro T-Zoids for 10 years. My ballstriking has improved greatly. The extra bounce has all but eliminated the fat shot. I don't know if it is the technology or the fact that the G10 irons "fit" my swing better, but something is going on. I have a slight Over The Top move and steep swing, so the G10's helped me. I would save my money and go to a good clubfitter. He can match your swing with the right clubs. That is when you will see the most benefit.

Youd likely see an improvement from a set of game improvement clubs but if you bought a set of new high-end player's clubs I doubt you would see much of an improvement.

Basically, my answer is the same as the other guys, Yes they will make the improvement.

But I thick there is 2 points in the improvement. One is the confidence you get from the new set, meaning confidence in the new set,is for example you can go and buy the brand new Nike's or Mizuno but you look at them and you do not have the confidence on them, they might be the newest but if you do not feel like love with them, you might not hit them at all.

The second point will be Fitting. Getting a fitted set will give you more confidence and the ability to hit them with a confident and relaxed position, feeling physically and mentally that those are the best set in the moment for YOU.

With this to points, you will definitely see a lot of improvement in your game.

Hope this is clear. LOL

Hi Folks,

Thanks very much for your input and information. I am going to continue working away with these clubs I have at present for a few months and possibly if my handicap is coming down, will get fitted for a decent pair of clubs.

cheers

In my opinion clubs are 10-15% of a game and 85 - 90% is your swing.

i started off with a 10 yr old set of blade irons which my father in law "donated to me". Had a hard time getting a clean hit. Then a buddy of mine rescued me with a set of Callaway X-18 and it made my learning experience much more pleasent. I could get decent distance and hit the ball straight.

I then recently had the chance to try a set of Nike Slingshot irons....man those were really forgiving! Even my mishits went straight.

So yeah, i think the new clubs help.

As said, new clubs will help. The game-improvement sets offer a lot more forgiveness on mishits. And if you are investing in clubs, be sure to have them fitted. A good pro will get them so that they fit your stance and swing. This will decrease your mishits and make your swing more confident and consistent.

Nothing replaces practice, but take advantage of everything you can. It's a lot more fun to practice when you have more decent shots than horrible ones.

My friend has Wilson Sam Snead clubs from the 60s and he hits them better than my new clubs. If your clubs are comfortable and work well, don't waste the money to get new ones. That's my two cents.

Things I Am Good at in Golf

- Hitting it in the drink
- Finding the rough with my drive
- Staying in the bunker- Hitting grassburners all the way to the hole- Three putting- Posting over par on 18 in only 9 holes- Swinging and missing with an iron

It will make a lot of difference mentally. The new clubs down there will give you a lot more confidence.

The newer technology will make some difference in the game and it will probably help you hit the ball farther.

    • Day 446 - 2025-12-20 Woke up early and got some swings in before teaching putting all day. Looking forward to doing the same tomorrow.
    • It's miles better, though.
    • Went up to Erie for a lesson. I still need to work on how I shift my weight into my right leg and turn into the right leg. I extend it too much and externally rotate it too much. That all causes me to over rotate the hips and cause weight shift issues in the downswing. I need to feel like my right leg gains flex (it doesn’t), and my knee cap faces forward. The right hip sinks back and right. I need a need a ton more internal rotation. I still have some right elbow issues in the backswing. The path is better, but too much right elbow bend. I need to maintain width in the right elbow and let my right shoulder retract more, let’s say at A3, which helps keep that right arm extended.
    • Day 130 12-20 Today was just swinging what i had and go from there. Did focus on getting to lead side. Recorded swings for lesson  and hit real balls.
