Hey guys I'm new around here. I'm 14, and in great athletic shape. I recently got my first new set of real clubs. A Cleveland set with a 5-PW and 3&4 hybrids, and a 9.5* Hibore XL driver. I took my dads cobra 56* SW and use it as a temporary wedge until I buy some better ones. I really am inconsistent, let me give you an example I shot a 102 at the beginning of the summer when I first got my clubs and I played the same course (72 par) a few days ago and ended up with a 120! and I have played at least once a week since I got them. I picked up on 10 on a par 3, and picked up 10 on the last par 5 because I hit 2 O.B. on the tee and couldn't do better than 10. Some times I hit a nice shot, and I can feel that it is a nice shot and all the tips I have gathered have worked. But many times I hit it on the wrong part of the club face (irons mostly) and it just skids in the grass about 50 feet. I try to put 90% of my weight on my back foot and a few other things but I'm not getting good contact on the ball most of the time. My drives off the tee are probably most of the reason I'm an over 100 player instead of low 90's or even high 80's. I am pretty strong (I bench 165) but my drives maybe go 225yds on a good day. I hit my 3 hybrid 220 or 225 off the tee! and they seem like they go further. Most of the times my drives to go straight, they go straight for about 100yds and then twist and turn left or right. I'm playing with hardly any wind and decent balls. (Maxfli, Willson.) I also don't get the high trajectory on any of my shots that I see others hit. Mine just go low especially my drives. Any help would be appreciated.

First of all, don't put 90% of your weight on the right foot. Set up balanced for the most part. You can have your weight slightly forward (60-40), front foot, for a wedge or slightly back (40-60) for your driver but don't load up on the right at set up as you will find it hard to shift the weight forward on the downswing. We would all love to see some videos of your swing to help you out more. It is hard to give unseen advice to a new golfer because you cannot zero in on one thing that is amiss in your swing. At your young age I would very strongly recommend getting some lessons. Someone with a first hand look at your swing could help you immensely.

    • I'm not sure you're calculating the number of strokes you would need to give correctly. The way I figure it, a 6.9 index golfer playing from tees that are rated 70.8/126 would have a course handicap of 6. A 20-index golfer playing from tees that are rated 64/106 would have a course handicap of 11. Therefore, based on the example above, assuming this is the same golf course and these index & slope numbers are based on the different tees, you should only have to give 5 strokes (or one stroke on the five most difficult holes if match play) not 6. Regardless, I get your point...the average golfer has no understanding of how the system works and trying to explain it to people, who haven't bothered to read the documentation provided by either the USGA or the R&A, is hopeless. In any case, I think the WHS as it currently is, does the best job possible of leveling the playing field and I think most golfers (obviously, based on the back & forth on this thread, not all golfers) at least comprehend that.
    • Day 115 12-5 Skills work tonight. Mostly just trying to be more aware of the shaft and where it's at. Hit foam golf balls.
    • Day 25 (5 Dec 25) - total rain day, worked on tempo and distance control.
    • Yes it's true in a large sample like a tournament a bunch of 20 handicaps shouldn't get 13 strokes more than you. One of them will have a day and win. But two on one, the 7 handicap is going to cover those 13 strokes the vast majority of the time. 20 handicaps are shit players. With super high variance and a very asymmetrical distribution of scores. Yes they shoot 85 every once in a while. But they shoot 110 way more often. A 7 handicap's equivalent is shooting 74 every once in a while but... 86 way more often?
