Help finding perfect irons

Hey there, new member here.

I'd like some help finding a good iron set for me. The salesmen at the local golf shops don't seem to be much help, or very knowledgeable.

I guess a little about me would help. I haven't played many rounds this summer (or ever) but I've been practicing several days a week. I would consider myself a mid handicap player even though I haven't played much. Probably a +18. I'm a strong guy and assume I have fast club head speed. I bought a used R5 driver that came with a standard shaft and I'm consistently hitting it 320+ (according to range finder) The biggest issue I face when hitting irons is mild slice and just getting a clean strike. The irons that I'm unfortunately using right now are about 8 year old spauldings that came as a complete set.

Level of play: intermediate, average 5 iron 200+ carry
Handicap: estimated +18


So I guess what I'm looking for is some advice as to what I should pursue. I feel like I'm progressing very quickly so I want an iron that I will be able to grow into, not something that will be good for me now, but too intermediate for me next year. I *think* I want steel shaft just because of torsion from swing speed. I've been thinking about x-18 by Callaway. I've heard good things about these from friends but am unsure if they would be good for me.

If there's any other pertinent information that would help you all, please let me know.

Mizuno makes the best irons in the world so I would start with demoing them, but don't stop there. Try all the golf clubs that you can and pick the ones that you like the best. Then, have them fitted. The staff at the store should be qualified to perform a fitting. This is the most important thing that you can do when purchasing a new set of irons. Plus, the cost of the fitting is usually deducted from the price of a new set.

Enjoy the process. I always find it fun to hit different clubs.

Thank you for your response. How should I go about demoing? Do places let you hand over a drivers license and take a set for a few hours or is it mostly the in store type thing? Are golf galaxy and golfsmith alright places to do this or would proshops be better?

Almost every golf store either has a simulator or a swing analyzer. Golf galaxy is a great place seeing they should always have a qualified staff member on hand to help you out. As far as the x-18 irons, they are alittle heavy of a club, try the x-20's they are probably the best set callaway has made in my opinion. Make sure you go on the swing analyzer, they are more acurate than the simulators, reason being is the sensors are alot more closer to the hitting area then a simulator. but the simulators are fun though.

About the callaways, I was looking at the 18s because they're a lot cheaper right now as opposed to the 20s. I'm still in college and thusly, broke.

Take your time and try everything, Mizuno, Taylor Made, Callaways, Cobras, etc. see what you like and fits your budget. I personally like Mizuno's irons for their feel, looks and performance.

Today I tried some forged cavity back mizunos, nike cci and x20. The mizunos were by far my favorite, such a sweet and feel good strike. I am really terrible at hitting off of those indoor mats though. I actually snapped a head off of an X20.

Supposedly the cavity back forgeds are easier to control because they aren't blades. Do you guys think that I might be able to get away with forged because of this?
