how important is it to shift the weight on the downswing onto your left side and onto the left leg? i was practicing and just worked on shifting my weight at the start of the downswing and the shots i hit were incredible, ball makes a totatlly different sound off the club as well.

its one of the fundamental components of a proper swing. it is pretty imperative.

It's pretty important to shift your weight. Without that, your swing wouldn't be.. well... a proper golf swing.

thanks for replies, is the shift what makes it drop into the slot?

Yes it causes the right shoulder/arm (hence club) to drop behind you onto a lower plane. I have a tendency to skip this step and just start turning my hips but this can throw my shoulder around instead of down creating an over the top swing path.

exactly!! thats what happens with me, I get so caught up with trying to put the club on the plane and getting my right shoulder to go down with my arms on the down swing that it just creates my right shoulder spinning out. when i focus on just shifting my weight first onto the left side the ball contact is great, it also feels as though my right shoulder is going down plane as well.

hopefully it is the right feeling.

Welcome to the "hitting from the inside" club. Keep it up. You're on the right track.

This is why for so many years they taught the left heel raise and plant. Provided you replant the left heel to start the downswing, you stand a much better chance getting your weight transfered and dropping into the slot. It's a very powerful downswing trigger.

i believe i have it down as i am getting great ball striking by shifting my weight to my left side through the ball.
My question is which swing is it necessary to shift onto the left side?
i know the full swing it is necessary so that the club can approach on shallower plane and fall into the slot but what about the pitch shot? chip? and 9 o clock swing?

    • I'm not sure you're calculating the number of strokes you would need to give correctly. The way I figure it, a 6.9 index golfer playing from tees that are rated 70.8/126 would have a course handicap of 6. A 20-index golfer playing from tees that are rated 64/106 would have a course handicap of 11. Therefore, based on the example above, assuming this is the same golf course and these index & slope numbers are based on the different tees, you should only have to give 5 strokes (or one stroke on the five most difficult holes if match play) not 6. Regardless, I get your point...the average golfer has no understanding of how the system works and trying to explain it to people, who haven't bothered to read the documentation provided by either the USGA or the R&A, is hopeless. In any case, I think the WHS as it currently is, does the best job possible of leveling the playing field and I think most golfers (obviously, based on the back & forth on this thread, not all golfers) at least comprehend that.

    • Yes it's true in a large sample like a tournament a bunch of 20 handicaps shouldn't get 13 strokes more than you. One of them will have a day and win. But two on one, the 7 handicap is going to cover those 13 strokes the vast majority of the time. 20 handicaps are shit players. With super high variance and a very asymmetrical distribution of scores. Yes they shoot 85 every once in a while. But they shoot 110 way more often. A 7 handicap's equivalent is shooting 74 every once in a while but... 86 way more often?
