I started a couple months ago, and I have a cheap Wilson set. I am the type of person who feels a need to upgrade equipment, and I will be doing so late this year. What should I be looking at? I am still a lower ability player (shooting in the mid 90s)

Price is a slight issue, I suppose I am looking at $200-$250 for a 3/4-PW set.

check to see what club specification you need:

what flex? regular or stiff
lenght? standard
lie angle?

The best prices are on ebay. I have found forged cavity back irons on ebay for under $100 plus shipping.

In this price range and for your handicap I really like Callaway x12,14 or 16s. I know people shooting in the 70s that are still playing these.

If I was to get a second set in that range, I would get an older set of blades. There is a golf shop near my university that sells older sets. They don't do a full refinish, but they clean them up, buff them and put some new grips on them. They come with persimmon woods and all. I figure that if I could hit these clubs then I could hit anything. To answer the OP's question, I am not really sure what is good in that price range, except maybe something off ebay. Good luck in your search.

Honestly, take a look at Taylor Made Rac os2 irons. You can get them brand new for like 350, so a used set would be a steal i'm sure.

I have never regretted buying these irons. I did so because my golf buddy was raving about them, and after hitting his a few times, I was sold.

They are reasonably forgiving, you can work them a bit especially for draws, and they play LONG (mostly because of the degree angles). Mine have also held up very well... and show little wear.

Definately try everything and don't just settle for the first set you try. There is so much stuff out there you have to try it all to see what you like.

Couldn't agree more wrt callys x-14, x-16 or even big berthas 2004onwards, and the TM rac os2. Also look into ping G5. Try as many as you can but it may be difficult to do so for the older generation models.
