What the...? re: private cc's that host PGA events

I'm a public course hack, and will never sniff most of the private courses that host a PGA event. With that background...

What does a private country club gain by hosting a PGA tour event? Is it purely the prestige? Is there monetary compensation (I assume so...)? Is it a pissing match with your local private c.c. competition, to brag that YOU hosted the "XXX Tourney"?

Also, the above referenced article mentions that the PGA Tour had to donate to their charities in exchange for an early exit from the contract. Do most private c.c.'s donate money to local charities? (other than the caddy scholarships at the club?)

Interesting article, and made me think about the host clubs for the stuff I'm watching on TV.

The benefits to a public course are obvious - people want to go play it. How many people play Torrey Pines because they see it at the Buick (and the recent U.S. Open)? But you asked about private courses.

I think it's the prestige in part, because they can say "well, Tiger Woods played here and he only broke 70 one round out of four" or "Phil Mickelson made a double bogey here. I don't feel so bad about my triple now."

The compensation helps, and I think the PGA Tour brings in top maintenance experts too, so the course gets to be put into top condition.

As was explained, the local course gets quite a bit of money to fix up the place, and repair the damage. All of the money made from tickets, etc pays for the prize pool, etc... but all of the extra money goes to LOCAL charities. PGA takes no profits from the events. They get it elsewhere.
It was noted that about $1M was donated to local charities from the Barclay's in paramus.
