I've heard from a lot of people that trusting the specs on a manufacturer site are an effort in faith at best. I've had some trouble adjusting to the length of my new driver so I dropped by the shop to get it cut down and re-gripped today. It's *supposed* to be a 45.75" shaft. It was 45.25".

At the end of the day, that's not a huge difference, but it's not what I thought it would be.. I had them cut the 1/4" off, but I doubt it's going to make too much of a difference, if any. And, it takes away my excuse for not hitting as well as I thought I should

On the other hand, now I have an excuse to buy the shaft I really want for it!

It depends where they measure from and where you measure from though. I really doubt the manufacturers lie about shaft lengths that usually arent made by them.

Shaft lengths can be "corrected" - what scares me are the tolerances on the loft and lie. I have heard anywhere from + or -1/2 degree to + or -1 degree on drivers. If that is the case, the 9 degree demo I hit may be 10 degree. When I buy the "same" club off the rack or the internet it may be 8 degrees. No wonder I can't hit the darn thing! With that in mind I try to buy the demo I hit and preferably outside not into a simulator which may not have been calibrated for a week. Anyone know what the tolerances are the manufacturers work to?

I'm 90% sure that kind of manufacturing information is closely held by each equipment manufacturer. There may be industry standards mutually agreed (but non-binding) on through some kind of golf manufacturer's association, but I couldn't locate any such organization with a google search.

These are all valid reasons as to why you should have your clubs measured and weighed before purchase. Most golf stores have the equipment, on site. It won't take more than a few minutes to measure lengths, lie angles, swingweights and flex. They should also make sure that the lofts are correct, too.

For the amount of money golfers spend, stores should go through bells and whistles to ensure accuracy.
