A buddy of mine has a set of irons, and one of them has a letter "A" stamped into it. Just what is it for?

Thanks

In a set I have (Callaway Pro Series X-14 Steelhead irons), it's actually a gap wedge, but like Franco said, the A stands for "approach" as in "approach wedge". The loft of my A-wedge is 52-degrees.

Not an attack wedge?

It's possible. However, since OP didn't give the brand/model of club there's no real way to check & see what the manufacturer of those clubs call the "A" wedge. With my Callaways, it's definite that "A" = Approach Wedge.

With other brands/models, who knows? Carnac the Magnificent maybe? And, we're assuming the club with the "A" on it is a wedge. There's no real certainty of that unless OP tells us.

I believe it's a set of Calloways. Looks to be a wedge. Thanks all!!

    • Day 23 - Back to full swing work, trying to swing loose and feel the club head.
    • Yet here we are. I don’t disagree that we should expect spectators to behave on any event, not just The Masters, but that’s not the case. There’s a sea of phones out there on any other event and a lot more incidents with spectators. Why shouldn’t we praise decent behaviour when it is often lacking in these days? There are plenty of golf related events to write negative articles about. I like when there is positivity to write about instead. Not that I expect them to behave at any other event like they do at Augusta just because it gets praise, but it’s nice to see positive spin on things. There are more than enough articles about rowdy spectators and cheating players. I think you nailed it in the first line: “grumpy old man”. 😉

    • Yeah, I take your point. Perhaps you've just identified the other side of the same coin: maybe there is very little to celebrate about pro golfers as people, so the golf media are clutching at straws trying to find something.
    • Go ahead and name three things that, in the world of golf, have been more praise-worthy in the last three months. I'll wait. It's not like they got Congressional medals or something.
